H10 iTunes sync tutorial

From iriver Wiki, your source for everything iriver - a part of MisticRiver.

NOTICE: I am currently in the process of making a better, step-by-step update of this article. I also wish to include some alternatives to the current method, which i will apply soon. This tutorial still works perfectly, but i wish to make some modification which will come soon. There are both content and asthetic changes coming real soon. (Please See User:iwantanimac/Scratchpad/1 for my progress.

Welcome to my tutorial for those H10 users who still like iTunes, and want to continue using it.

First of all, the iTunes music store is not compatible at all with the H10, or any other iriver product I know of for that matter. The DRM is not able to be used by the H10, and I'm not even going there.

This tutorial should work on a Mac too, with the Cocoa GUI version of EasyH10, just try it.

NOTE: The exact way of doing this may change as updates to itunes are made available.
Any areas of the tutorial which you think may be outdated, please mark them with an asterisk (*) and let me know on the Talk page.

Mac commands are given in square brackets [like this] and Windows commands in (Circular Brackets)

Contents

Requirements

  • An iriver H10 5/6/20Gb which is in UMS mode - Click if your player doesn't show up as a drive (E:, F:, etc.) in My Computer, or doesn't show up at all on Mac OS.
  • iTunes installed
  • (OPTIONAL - COMING SOON) iTunes Agent (Win Only)
  • EasyH10 [Mac/Win) or iriver Plus 1 (Win Only)

Prepping iTunes

  • To begin with, we need to make sure your importing settings are all in order, choose Edit>Preferences and the Advanced>Importing tab. Make sure it is set to MP3 and your desired bitrate. Click Ok when you're done.

    • To find out what songs will not work straight up, make a new smart playlist and make the condition
"Kind is not MPEG Audio File" and "Kind does not contain movie"
    • This will filter out your AACs, m4as and any other non-native format for your H10.
    • Make sure that none of these are protected, as these will not be able to play. (NOTE: I don't know about protected MP3 files, though.. someone'l have to enlighten me.)
    • Now select all the files (Ctrl+A)[?+A] and right-click [Option-Click] on any file, then select "Convert selection to MP3"
    • Wait for the process to complete, depending on the number, bitrate and size of the songs the time will vary.
    • Once the process is complete, you can say goodbye to the old format songs by hitting Delete (OR keep them - it's up to you... but may prove annoying in the future), then selecting to move to the Recycle Bin [Trash].
    • The newly converted songs will retain all your ID3 information and should all be the same as before, but will be in the iTunes music folder under Artist/Album/01 name.mp3.
    • If you are going to use the iriver plus method, or if you just want to keep all your mucis in the one place, select Advanced>Consolidate Library. This will copy all the files that aren't already in the iTunes folder into the iTunes Music folder.

Transfer and Database Updating

EasyH10 Method

The EasyH10 Method works fine on any H10 (i think...) provided it is in UMS mode.

  • To make your H10 accept your music, make sure it is in UMS mode, and that is shows up in My Computer as a removable disk. Open this disk and choose Media>Music. Any files that are there that you do not have in your library should be added now and the old files deleted.
    • Now in the Library window, you can select all (Ctrl+A)[?+A] and drag the files into the window shoeing H10/Media/Music.
    • This will copy all the files into the folder, and iTunes will be frozen during the copy, so if you hae a lot of songs, it will lock you out for a while.
    • Once the copying process is complete, you can fire up EasyH10 and make sure it's set to update your listing.
    • Safely disconnect your H10 and you're done!

iriver Plus Method

The iriver plus method uses the same iTunes preparation, but uses the iriver plus application that comes with UMS H10s.

  • Within iriver Plus, choose File>Add To Library>Folder anc choose the iTunes\iTunes Music folder. iriver plus will then populate the library with all the compatible files in the folder.
    • Once this is complete, connect your H10 and wait for the files to be checked and the database constructed, then choose the Sync option, and the files will be copied, and the database updated.
