H10 Skinning

From iriver Wiki, your source for everything iriver - a part of MisticRiver.

You are now able to skin your H10's screens. The encryption in the mi4 files has been figured out so, unlike previous skinning attempts, this applies to all images on the H10. This works for all H10 versions (5/6GB and 20GB, UMS and MTP, but not H10Jr.), and so far it has been tested and shown to work on 20GB H10 MTP, 5/6GB H10 UMS and MTP, firmware versions 2.51 and 2.53.

Be aware that the instructions below have so far only been minimally tested, so there is a possibility of permanent damage to your player. Follow these instructions at your own risk.

You can change all images except those stored in the bootloader (BL_*.rom). So that's everything except:

  • Boot Screen
  • Lock icon
  • Low Battery Icon
  • USB connected Screen
  • USB Connected Icon & Text
  • USB Busy Icon & Text
  • Safe to disconnect icon & Text.

Instructions

What you need:

  • H3Mod - link below
  • mi4 'reference' file - link below
  • original firmware - get this off your player
  • player to install modified firmware on (for testing and use)

To get original firmware off the player:

  • Make sure you have upgraded your firmware to at least version 2.51
  • Connect your H10 to your computer (in UMS mode)
  • Go to the 'System' directory on your H10 and copy the *.mi4 file to somewhere on your computer. (Note: The 'System' directory is a hidden directory and may not be visible. If not, make sure you have set to display hidden files and folders.)

To get mi4 reference file:

To modify the firmware:

  • Download H3Mod (version 2.5.2398)
  • Unzip the download into a directory
  • Copy the reference file downloaded above into this same directory
  • Run H3Mod.exe
  • Select File->Load. When the load dialog comes up, select the original mi4 firmware file you copied to your computer and click 'Load'
  • H3Mod should load and decrypt the file and you should have a list of all images in the firmware on the bottom right. Scroll through them to see them all.
  • Edit the images in the firmware. There is a lot of information about how to do this on the H3Mod website and in the help file.
  • Select File->Save to save the updated firmware. H3Mod will do the encryption for you.

To upgrade your player with the modified firmware:

  • On your player, go back to the 'System' directory and rename *.mi4 to *.mi4.bak (taking note of its original name: the name differs between player versions. For example, H10 20GB is called H10_20GC.mi4 whereas H10 5/6GB is called simply H10.mi4) - this is so we have a backup of the original firmware in case something goes wrong.
  • Copy the new firmware from your computer to the 'System' directory on your H10 and rename it to (original name).mi4 where (original name) is the specific name your player uses for its firmware
  • You should now have the original and the modified firmware files in the System directory of your player. There may be other files there, but ignore them
  • Eject your player and unplug it from the USB port
  • It should restart with the new firmware

If it doesn't work

If it doesn't work, you will probably get a 'System Files Missing' error. To recover from this,

  • Connect your player to your computer (in UMS mode) again
  • Go to the 'System' directory on your player
  • Delete the modified firmware and rename the original (if you followed the instructions above, it will have a .bak file extension) to (original name).mi4 where (original name) is the name your player gives to its firmware. This will restore the original firmware
  • Eject the player and unplug it from the USB port
  • It should start back up with the original firmware

More Information and basic facts

  • This process MAY brick your player. It has been tested on a variety of players, yet has not yet been too much of a problem - most commonly, people misunderstand the renaming steps and mess something up.
  • We are not to be held responsible for any damage to your player.
  • If your PC works at high color settings, you will lose detail when H3Mod converts the image to a player-useable format. The players can't handle 32-bit color, only 16-bit.

Skin Packs/Download Links

  • No skin packs have yet been made

Notes

If your player "bricks" (locks up and fails to even boot again), we do NOT take responsibility for it.
