Difference between U.S. and International version of the H3xx Series Players

From iriver Wiki, your source for everything iriver - a part of MisticRiver.

There are two versions, the U.S. version and the international version, all players outside the U.S. are the same.

iRiver released a U.S. version of the H3 player to create chaos and confusion

How do I tell which version I have?

The usb ports are marked differently.

The international usb ports are marked "USB 1.1 Host" and "USB 2.0 Data"

The U.S. usb ports are marked "Media" and "Data".

What is the difference in practical terms?

The U.S. version comes with a clock and can syncronise with WMP enabling it to upload and play DRM protected music, such as you buy from Napster and iTunes.

The U.S. version is not supposed to support usb on the go (usbotg) that allows the player to download files from digital cameras, usb memory sticks and other portable devices without a pc.

The U.S. version comes with (at the moment) firmware 1.03. There are no official links to this version of the firmware so it is sort of not possible to change back to the U.S. firmware, but there is a link here

If you do change the firmware to k or eu and then back to U.S. you will not be able to play DRM files again. Further, each time you turn the player on a "Cannot Find DRM Key" message appears. While people are looking into fixing this no solution has yet been found.

Aside from this issue, many people have changed the firmware from the U.S. to either Korean (k) or European (eu) (which are almost identical, although the Korean firmware gives more radio options), with no reported problems so far.

There are some possible warranty issues with changing the firmware on a U.S. player, but it is not yet clear.

Changing to k or eu firmware does give the U.S. players the ability to play video, like the international players, and does seem to give some usbotg abilities, but our knowledge of this is still in a state of flux.

Accessories?

The international version comes with the full compliment of accessories. A microphone, an AC adaptor, a usb cable for usbotg, a case, headphones, a non-lcd remote and the international H340 comes with a docking station.

The U.S. version comes without the remote, usbotg cable, and the U.S. H340 does NOT come with a docking station.
