The iriver clix.

clix is a successor of the U10 which is mainly an American product for the American market. The clix 2 GB was introduced in May 2006. A 4 GB version in black was expected since October 2006. It could be ordered first in Sweden (irivernordic) as a special edition for about $ 333 and became available in the USA by November 2006.

At CES 2007 the next generation was presented. Early versions showed the name "U20", while the name was changed to clix 2G (second generation) before delivery.

From the outside you won't notice any difference between U10 and clix. The details are hidden within:

Contents

Firmware

clix spread from a close partnership with Microsoft. It was designed explicitly to work together with Windows Media Player 11. It won't work on any other platform. The major drawback, apart from software and DRM limitations: It won't even charge via USB (see details below).

Thus it's not very probable that clix will be available anywhere else.

... details on the advantages of WMP11 and its MTP protocol vs. UMS should be added here ...

The major differences for the user:

  • The clix boots faster.
  • Navigation was improved.
  • clix supports Album Art.
  • Flash Lite is available not only in version 1, but also version 2.0

Firmware v. 2 added Audible support.

Hardware

clix takes different hardware than U10. The CPU is a Samsung ARM processor SA58700X07 which offers more options than U10's SA58450X03. This permits improved flash and video quality, although it will result in a higher power consumption and reduced battery life.

Charging

clix does not work with plain USB power sources (e.g. car chargers, wall adaptors or active USB hubs). However, external chargers do exist. Charging can be done on PCs with proper software (such as WMP11), too. The reason is twofold:

First: Although the USB plug from clix and U10 looks like an ordinary USB plug of type A, a closer look will show a fifth pin between VBUS ( 5V) and D-. This pin is used by external chargers, which do not offer the typical 0.5 A current from USB, but up to 2 A. Adaptors and home made workarounds exist by now. Check Connectors for details.

Second: For any reason someone decided that even charging can be done only when proper software is around. What's next? DRM certified electrons from Microsoft? But there's another workaround: a deep discharge will move the clix to a state where any plain USB charger will work again. However, frequent deep discharges will reduce the battery life time of its Li-Ion battery.

Up to now charging seems to be a firmware issue. People who got the initial firmware 1.1 (1.10) do not observe any charging trouble via a plain USB charger. Firmware 1.11 does not support USB charging. There's no known downgrade option to 1.10, which was used on the first models only. Current clix models are delivered with firmware 1.11.
