Most MP3 players can be charged by connecting them to the USB port of your PC.
The typical USB (Universal Serial Bus) spec is:
- Pin 1: VBUS 5 V
- Pin 2: D-
- Pin 3: D
- Pin 4: GND
The supply voltage should be 5 V, but may differ between 4.75 and 5.25 V. Mini-USB devices should run down to 4.4 V. The minimum spec is 4.375 V.
A standard USB supply may provide up to 500 mA (which results in 2.5 Watt: 500 mA * 5 V = 2.5 W). This power may be taken from a PC, but also from an active hub (which has a power supply of its own, such as four times USB -> 2 Ampere power brick), a wall charger (converting 110/230V AC to 5 V DC), a car charger (limiting 12 V down to 5 V) etc.
External chargers as iriver accessories are specified as e.g. 5 V, 2 A. This is more than the USB standard permits. Possible explanations: Either the power source could charge more than one device. Or only 500 mA of those 2000 mA are used. Or the standard is ignored. But the real explanation may come as a surprise: iriver added a fifth charge pin to the USB plugs for U10 and clix which is connected to other pins of the player and may permit higher charge currents. Thus for real USB ports any power supply might be used for charging a USB device, as long as a stable voltage and sufficient supply current is provided. Take care to ensure these conditions: Some car chargers will not prevent voltage peaks which may fry your device. Some supplies are designed for higher currents - they will not work properly when the load is too small.
How to connect the MP3 player to the supply? There are dedicated adaptor cables for this purpose, e.g. connecting to the 18 pin H10 plug or the 24 pin U10 connector. Otherwise, the USB cable of these devices is the adaptor that you need in order to connect to any USB power supply. Many early players use standard USB cables (USB-A -> USB-B or USB-A -> Mini-USB).
Batteries
Typical MP3 players with built in cells have Lithium-Ion accumulators (abbr: Li-Ion). A typical Li-Ion battery provides 3.6 to 3.7 V. This meets the needs ov 5 V supplies as well as the need for internal supplies of about 3.0 or 3.3 V. Typical Li-Ion-Cells offer about 500 to 2500 mAh capacitance, depending on the size and technology. Matching replacement parts are hard to find. Battery life is about 500 cycles. Be aware that even a small recharge will count almost as much as a full charge. Typical life span is down to 80 % after two years, even without usage. Only few pieces achieve life spans of more than five years.
Devices, which are powered e.g. by a single, replacable battery may have to convert the battery voltage upwards for the internal needs. A typical AA-Cell, based on a 2500 mAh Ni-MH battery (Nickle Metal Hydride) provides 1.2 V, which is converted to 3.3 V by internal step-up convertors and a typical efficiency between 70 and 90 %. Up to 1000 charge cycles are claimed here - but this depends on the quality of the charge control, as well as the quality of the battery.
Both types of batteries life longer when kept at cool places.
