Your best bet is to encode the dvd to an avi file, then use Virtual Dub to get cut out the exact clip you need.
Check out http://www.doom9.org/ They have anything you'd possibly ever want to know about dvd ripping / encoding / burning, etc. |

P.S Does the H3xx still only allow you to play movies to a max of 1hr 40mins?? |

Just wanted to mention this for APPLE USERS
- because I've never seen any related posts in the Faqs..... iRiverter works great on my G4 MAC, but not on my G3 Mac ***** for converting video for play on my H320 [U.S. converted to 1.28K] So use a G4 Mac if you have any problems. Plus, iRiver Sync also works great to sync to iTunes and for making PLAYLISTS. |

Paul was it a conclusive test? Did you use a few G3s and a few G4s to test it? |

Both have OSX 10.3.4 Both are dual boot (OSX;OS9) models. The G3 was an iBook The G4 was a Powerbook The iBook is my daily 'workhorse'. I've used it for making FLASH vides for the Web; making iMovies; ect. It never fails. The iBook has Quicktime Pro installed (in the OS 9 native mode) so (unlike the Powerbook) plays AVI files with its embedded audio. So I would have thought it would run iRiverter without a hitch - between the 2 computers. But what would happen is that iRiverter would just stall in the conversion saying "converting at 0 FFS". I was also unsuccessful in converting videos (on the iBook) using FFMpeg. I got converted files that, by their depicted attributes, seemed the same as 'Hxx example video' files I downloaded (that played on the H320). But the FFMeg converted files wouldn't. I never tried FFmpeg in the Powerbook after finding success with iRiverter - because of all the time I wasted trying to get something to work on the iBook. Are you saying that other people get iRiverter to work on G3's? Last edited by Paul757 : December 1st, 2005 at 03:38 PM. |

No Im asking if you did a conclusive test. Many people use a computer, mac or ibm and dont know they have stuff installed so I am wondering if maybe something on the G4 was not present that is on the G3 which I suspect may be the case. Been a few years since I used a mac propperly so I cant really help. That said there are a load of useful mac applications I have linked to in the past using google search that would possibly give you a faster conversion.
Question for you, have you considered upgrading to OSX??? I would certainly suggest it. It is a lot more stable IMHO than 9. |

I don't know what method of test would be "conclusive" - other than using virgin clean machines or someone saying they have sucessfully used iRiverter on a G3 machine. I'm only saying that (for me) iRIverter would not work on my G3 iBook, but it worked on my G4 Powerbook. The 2 computers I tried iRiverter on were both running OS X (10.3.4). I'm sure there are things installed on one computer that are not on the other, but nothing other than iRiverter was ever running during any attempt to run it. I've never seen very many comments from Mac users concerning video conversion with Iriverter; although I recall someone saying they had similar trouble a long while back. If someone has used iRiverter successfully on a G3 machine, maybe they can say. |

iRiverter 0.14 problem
I've been using iRiverter now for a year and had no real problems with it. I bought a new PC a week ago and cannot get the program to work properly. Everytime it converts a video for my H300 it plays to sound perfectly, but the video on the H300 shows one black and white frame every 5-6 seconds.
When I try to play the file on my PC using windows media player, again the sounds plays fine, but it says error downloading codec and doesn't play any video. I have updated all my codecs, XviD, DivX, etc etc, tried reinstalling the program a few times but still can't get it to work. HELP!! Thanks! |

...because there is an issue with iriverter on Windows XP. To fix it, go to C:\Program Files\iriverter\ ...right click on iriverter.exe, and go to the compatiblity tab. Enable Windows 2000 compatiblity and apply it. |

As far as 1.29 and video goes, I believe the only difference is that 1.29 gives video its own function so that videos don't get selected for play when using the Random play function. I wish iRiver would be smart enough to post a HEX version of the 1.29 file for people that don't have a PC to run the Executeable that renders the HEX. |

Paul757: i think they were smart enough to post HEX file...
check the international site http://www.iriver.com/html/support/su_index.asp there are zipped files of 1.29 EU, K, J

Thanks for the reply,
I had read about that issue with 0.14 and I've already tried running it in Windows 2000 mode but i get the same result. I even tried downgrading to version 0.13, but everytime I press the convert button I get a mencoder.exe error almost immediately and the video does not convert. I have lots of videos already on my iRiver H340 that have been converted previously and they all play fine with windows media player on my PC. I also tried converting a video using one of the other presets for the other Iriver models (I forget the name of the model at the top of the list, A5something...??!?!? ) and that converted and played fine in windows media player. Any more suggestions?! Even if anyone knows how to solve the mencoder.exe error in 0.13 so I can go back to using that. Thanks, Steve |

Still XP home. Not sure what u mean about the 64bit media centre!?
I've actually tried both versions of 0.13 and my original copy of 0.12, but I can't seem to get any of them to work. I don't know if there's a registry entry hanging around after the uninstall that is causing 0.13 and 0.12 to crash with the mencoder.exe problem I'm having. I'm actually abroad at the moment so I can't try iRiverter on my desktop to see if it it my laptop that is the problem, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Thanks again, Steve |

I am running Iriverter on Mandriva Linux (2006). After much trouble, i finally got 0.13r1 to run. It pops up in a window and runs fine.
BUT...... It sits at the converting window and does nuthin...i thought maybe i didnt have the codecs or something, but i used another program and it found xvid and mp3lame and allowed me to encode a video. I really want to use Iriverter cuz it is dead easy and i dont have to set everything up all the time.... Any ideas??? In the shell window, there are no errors, just the output the mencoder.....and then it sits there.... Code:
DEBUG--- Running: mencoder /home/jungmin/Desktop/50centxxx.avi -o /home/jungmin/Desktop/50centxxx.h300.avi -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=500:max_bframes=0 -oac mp3lame -lameopts mode=2:cbr:br=128 -vf scale=220:165,expand=220:176,harddup -af resample=44100 -ofps 10 -srate 44100 |

I don't mean to seem trite, but did you actually let it go for awhile. Transcoding can take some time. You seem to know what you are doing (a.k.a. you are using Linux, which is bonus points in my book). Did you check to see if the process was still running and consuming CPU? Or did it idle or crash?

If i manually enter the commands that mencoder is sending to the shell.....it doesnt work.
Code:
mencoder /home/jungmin/Desktop/50centxxx.avi -o /home/jungmin/Desktop/50centxxx.h300.avi -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=500:max_bframes=0 -oac mp3lame -lameopts mode=2:cbr:br=128 -vf scale=220:165,expand=220:176,harddup -af resample=44100 -ofps 10 -srate 44100 MEncoder 1.0pre7-4.0.1 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon Willamette (Family: 8, Stepping: 2) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: Type: 8 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!
