[How to] Gain more storage space on your player

[How to] Gain more storage space on your player

Answer:

Turning off System Restore for your iRiver Player

If you are using one of Microsoft’s more current versions of Windows you are likely aware that it has a powerful function called System Restore. This function monitors your Hard Drives and allows you to reset the drive to an earlier date in time. This is very useful should you have a problem with the installation of new software or maybe pick up a virus.

There is a problem with this feature when you are using a iRiver music player with Windows in that while System Restore monitors your player it also uses up some of your players memory in the process. As you fill up your player with music there may come a time when you want to recover this space and allow you to put more music on.

The following describes how to disable the System Restore function on an iRiver player and in the process regain some used storage space:

To start the process of turning off the restore function connect your player to your PC and turn it on….both the PC and Player.

In Windows XP click on the Start>All Programs>Accessories >System Tools>System Restore. After clicking on System Restore you will get a dialog box for this function. Click on System Restore Settings on the left side of this dialog box. A new box will open showing all the drives on your PC and you should see your iRiver player in this screen. Highlight the player and click on the settings button. This will alloy you to disable the System Restore function on just your player while allowing it to remain functioning on your iRiver player.

Caution: Do not click on the disable all drives box since this will shut off the System Restore on your entire PC.

If you now view the files contained on your player and have "view hidden files" enabled you will see a system.ini file. This can safely deleted. While you are going through this process you should also consider disabling the Recycle Bin function on your player too. This is covered in other FAQ's in this forum.

Hopefully you got through this simple process and have now regained some valuable storage space on your iRiver Player.

enjoy the music,

sdz
