[Q] How do I update the codec in my ripper

I love using my existing ripper but newer versions of my favorite codec have become available. How do I upgrade the codec in my ripper?

Answer:

This is not as hard as you may think. All rippers are really simple frontends or GUI’s for running codecs developed by other people. You will first need to get the new codec. Which can be found at the following site:

http://www.rarewares.org

You should select the type of codec you want i.e. mp3LAME or Ogg which is the most current and stable version. Download this file to your desktop. Please note that these codecs are zip files that will need to be unzipped. For now I would suggest you unzip the new codec to your desktop.

Next you need to use Windows Explorer and go to the ripper file. Opening the ripper you need to look for the codec file. It will have a name like LAME.exe or oggenc.exe. Once you find that file make a note of the name…write it down somewhere.

Next go back to your desktop and find the downloaded codec that you have unzipped to your desktop. Rename that file to the exact name as the codec file you have found in your ripper. Once the file is renamed you simply cut and paste that file into your ripper. Windows will ask if you want to overwrite the existing file…click yes.

Note: some rippers will also require dll files to properly do their job. Those files are also available at the site shown above.

Second Note: some codecs are tailored to P4 CPU’s. If you are running that chip make sure you get the codec that is designed for that. They are clearly marked on the site above.

I have used this process to upgrade codecs in every popular ripper and it works fine in Audiograbber, dbpoweramp and others.

Good luck and enjoy the music,

sdz
