Question Sansa e200/2g nano/zen v plus bass and sound quality
Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone of you can help me out. I'm thinkin of getting a newer, smaller 8gb mp3 player. my choices are the sansa e280, a second gen 8gb nano or the creative zen v plus. I currently have an iRiver H320, which i love very much, because the sound quality is awesome and the bass boost is very powerful and clear. One thing that I am worried about with these littler players is their sound quality, and also how good their bass boost/equaliser is.

I borrowed a friends first gen nano, and the sound quality was pathetic. When I put the 'Bass booster' EQ setting on, it was nowhere near as good as the H320's. it distorted too (even on a low volume!). So I'm wondering if anyone knows how the second gen nanos fair in this regard.

The sansa uses a portalplayer chip (i think) like the first gen nano, so is its sound quality the same as a first gen nano?

Also, if anyone has had both a H320 and one of the other players above, I'd be interested in your view on the sounds quality compared to a H320.

Its a shame iriver dont have a small 8gb mp3 player out.

The new Nanos don't use the same hardware as the old ones, they now have a Wolfson chip in them.
I have the 8GB 2nd gen Nano and I would say the sound quality is as good as my H340. That said, I don't bother using the EQ on either player as I like to listen to my music as it's meant to be and bass boosting ruins it, regardless of the brand of player, so I don't know whether or not you'll agree with me if you try one out.

If its not too much effort, I'd be greatful if you could put your H340 on +24 bass with the volume around 18-20, then try and see if your nano comes close to it and most importantly doesnt distort.

There's no point 'cos I'll just think the H340 sounds like crap.
And trying to have me compare the two for you on settings I think sound terrible isn't going to be a definitive test.

You'd be much better off going to a store that sells the Nanos, plugging your own headphones into one and seeing if you can get it to do what you want.


As for the 8GB Clix, it's probably not going to be long before it's out.

On that subject, what headphones do you use Kebabrov? And what genres/styles of music do you use the bass boost with?

Yeah, that's a good point - I probably use different headphones to you, as well as having different opinions regarding the use of EQ settings.

fair points step66.

i have sennheiser CX 300s. these are pretty bassy already. I mostly listen to trance and drum and bass.

I may wait for the 8gb clix. the photos and videos of it look very cool! I just hope the battery life is competitive with the other players.

Rated @ 25 hours, that's one better than the Nano, 5 better than the Sansa and (IIRC) 10 better than the Creative thing.


I have a pair of Audio Technica headphones, never used or tried any Sennheisers and I can't stand trance music.

sennheisers are good headphones. mine sound very clear. the only other kind i've used are sony ones.

I think the clix2 will be released in the middle of May because that is when the first clix was released and Jeff points out that the 8Gb will come after the 2/4GB.

Email this to iriver about getting new firmware for the clix. They will probably take ideas for their new players too so it's better to tell them what needs to be improved before releasing a new player.

I use a e270 with Rockbox and I'm not looking back. The MPEG plugin works great on it as well, so it makes the Sansa compatible with many audio formats, MPEG videos, and drag and drop via USB in the file explorer (unlike iPod, Zune, Creative, etc). Highly recommended.
The only points down go to the crappy clicky wheel, it's nowhere as good as the iPod, but it still does the job. The stock firmware is decent as well, and so are the stock earphones.
As for the View, I'll wait for Rockbox support before even being tempted.
