So many versions?!

I am new to this rockbox idea. i have seen it for years but was always hesitant. i'm starting to think i should bt have questions. there is one downloadable on rockbox's website for the 320 but there are so many here as well. which one should i download? are all of the ones here custom builds off the one from their site? thanks a bunch. am i able to convert back if i do not like(highly doubtful)?

thanks
brad

yes, the custom builds are all based off of the one's on the rockbox website.
i would recommend darky's build since it's one of the most updated ones with lots of nice additional features, and it is going to be updated again soon.
and yes, you can easily convert back if you dont like it.

Getting hold of Darky's Build

In repoly to schwab, I would also like to ask for help! I have downloaded what I think is Darky's latest version, but I don't get album art to work. I notice that Darky has got folders which include "Patches". But I don't know whether I need to install these.

Is it possible to provide a link that takes us to the actual latest file of Darky's build rather than just the series of pages, as I don't think I am doing it right, somehow.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jim

link to latest version:
http://rockbox.biniaris.net/Files/Da...0913-14680.zip
He always puts the latest version in his first post on the first page of the thread.
So just download that and unzip it to the root of your h300. (for a clean installation delete the .rockbox folder and the rockbox.iriver file first, but be careful not to delete you have a wps or theme that you have installed into the rockbox folder). Don't worry about any other patches / folders or whatever.

I'm not sure about album art, i don't have any on my iriver, but i do know that it has to be a certain size to work and you must have a wps that is compatible with the build.

If you don't have RockBox, get it now.

All I can say is that rockbox has made my h300 an h3000, ten times better... at least. If you ended up with an iriver because you hate seeing white ear buds and can't stand hearing your mom call anything that plays music an 'ipod' then do yourself a favor - get rockbox. It made me realize that there are still people out there that are in it for the functionality and not just the image.

Before I got rockboxed a year and half ago, I too was worried. Since then I have converted three of my friends and all have said that it made them feel like they got a new mp3 player... an mp3 player with far better features and a much better overall user experience.

For those who have an h300 especially, do yourself a favor and get rockbox to take full advantage of this fine piece of hardware.

(This is not necessarily a response to the original poster but more an attempt to spread christmas-time rockbox spirit. Merry Christmas.)

I'm using Norbusan version and I'm happy with it but there's few details I'm hoping to fix with Darky's version but I'm a little confused and scared about the change. I need your help before I make my decision. First, if I delete the present rockbox folder I will get rid of the WPS and THEMES,,,,do you mean to save those folders like in my desktop and then add them to the Darkys build?. In case I want to go back to Norbusan version, do I need to reinstall the firmware patcher? Thank you!

you can just replace the new files with the old ones, you do not need to repatch the original firmware. or you can copy the wps and themes folder somewhere then start with a fresh rockbox folder and stick the wps and themes back in.

Thank you for your clean explanation. I feel more comfortable now to go ahead and make the switch. I'll give Darky's version a try.

I recommend the multifont build. You can get some really nice wps for it.

Well, I tried the switch but it didn't go as good as I expected. First of all, I couldn't find the MULTIFONT BUILD and no idea where to get those nice WPS from. Everything on my H320 looks like nothing changed (all the setting remained the same) except for the opening screen with the Darky's logo. The problems are with my previous rockbox plugins: most of them are showing the infamous: "Incompatible version" message. E.g.: rockbox calendar (very important to me). Unless I can get some help to fix it, I'm going back to Norbusan's version. I don't want to give up that easy and I'm sure I can handle these small problems but I do really need help to complete this long awaited switch. Thanks in advance! BTW......Happy holidays!

LUMAOM:
I know that it is not very simple around here at the moment, with loads of unupdated builds and wps's floating around... it requires a lot of patience and will to try out and experiment to really make things work. But i'll try to help.
Here is a link for the latest Darky's Build (minimal build with multifonts and other important stuff):
New Build For H300 (Darky's Build)

And here is a link for the wps i made and use, and it works with the build above (which i use at the moment):
http://www.erkkila.fi/puumaja/rockbo...i_Font_WPS.zip

And be sure to have the fonts installed:
http://download.rockbox.org/daily/fo...kbox-fonts.zip
(just extract the fonts folder inside the rockbox folder)

That configuration works perfectly for me!

Thank you! I'll try all the links you're providing when my H320 decides to connect to my PC. I'm not able to do so all of the sudden. I need to format my HDD and start from scratch. Can I format my HDD from Rockbox? Maybe after that I'll be able to connect and download everything all over.

oh sorry to hear! i hope you'll get the thing fixed. is it not recognized at all? does your iriver/rockbox think that it's connected (connection icon on screen)? can you connect from original firmware?
are you sure that your usb port is not broken? I dont think you can format the hdd from the dap... you should do a search or start a topic (if you havent already), since others might be able to help. good luck!

Coming back here after a long absence (last patch I installed was the battery fix) feels weird...

I recommend Needleboy's build! though seriously Darky's seems to be most up to date imho.

Prinssi,
I was able to connect thru my firmware, format and install Rockbox again (I do prefer the Norbusan version (rockcalendar!) and everything is running OK again. It does take quite a while to open some files, but I can live with that. Thank you for your help and BTW, I'm a loyal fan of Radiohead too!........They sound great on my H320....now!

great to hear you got things fixed!
i am constantly nervous about the fact that there will be a day (hopefully faaaar away) when my H320 just dies. after all it has already been running for years, and nowadays you cant really expect any electrical gadged to last very long...

yeah, Radiohead is amazing, and In Rainbows really is an amazing album. Did you order the beautiful discbox? i just got mine, i took nearly a month to arrive from UK!

NO I didn't. I just needed to take care of some more important priorities, like getting the latest XBox for my son at Christmas! Go figure....
I'm telling you.....the day my H320 dies it will certainly be a sad event...I burned my first one, then I bought a Creative ZenM (or something like that).....a very nice device, but I discoverd later that my heart belongs to my modest H320....I still have the reative but I purchased a used iRiver and that's why I'm having so many problems. The HDD was no good and the battery neither (just my luck!) but thanks to your advice and a couple of more suggestions from the forum it's still alive and well!
