Hi and welcome to MisticRiver.

Go to the General Settings menu (from the main menu), select Display and then LCD Settings. In there, select Backlight, and set it to OFF. The LCD will no longer come on when you press a button.

Ah, ok. I'm not sure whether you can discriminate about which buttons cause the backlight to come on. I have mine set to First Keypress Enables Backlight Only, so that the light comes on when I press something but doesn't perform the action.

If you have a copy of the old .rockbox directory, just replace the current one with that.

You'll need to change the backlight back to the value you want it to stay on for before it switches off (in the same spot as you switched it off). Sorry, I misinterpreted your first post

No, there's no need to apologise!

Do you have a copy of the old version you had? If not, can you download it again?

General settings > display > LCD Settings > Keypress effects when backlight is off

set to the last option (Navi: BL, A-B & Rec: Action & BL, others: Action

BL stands for back light, so pressing navi will only turn the display on, a-b and rec will turn the display on and perform the action, all other buttons will just perform their action without turning the display on
