Exclamation Rockbox for the Blind

I am trying to install rockbox for a blind friend. I know I know "go to the website and follow the instructions"...well I did that. I have the iriver H320 where it will boot up and flash the rockbox logo, then it just goes to (looks like) the hard drive directory. the screen shows:
fonts
RECORD
rockbox
These all seem to be folders, except rockbox, when I select it, I just get the Rockbox logo again and back to the above screen.
Can anyone help? I tried several different versions of Rockbox. I have read somewhere about possibly formating the hard drive, however I don't want to risk "bricking" my friends iRiver.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You're in Rockbox. Now would be a good time to take a look at the Rockbox Manual to get an understanding of how Rockbox works.

Sorry, no I don't have music on the player. I tried putting some music on and it would not play...however if I reinstalled Iriver it would play the music that I installed correctly. Febs, Rockbox is not doing anything (I did look at the manual), I was told I would have icons, not just showing me what I have on my hard drive.

If the music is in WMA format Rockbox will not play it. If so you will need to re rip the music to a format that Rockbox can recognize.

Thank you all very much. Especially you fettesEuter, very helpful, I was not even aware that I could go to those settings till I pushed the "A-B" button. My blind friend will be very happy.

Note: Rockbox will not play .wma files. Re-encode / re-rip them into mp3 format. Or aac, wav, flac, mpc or other codec that Rockbox supports.

Can rockbox record using the line in record option? If so, how? I tried using the record button but nothing happens. Checked the rockbox manual and it shows (still to be written). Anyone have any ideas?

you have to go into recording/settings and choose line in as opposed to int mic. I think this is explained in the manual but if not it's pretty simple

You can, however configure the action that rockbox does, if you press the REC button.

AFAIK there are two options: action for a short press (<1 sec), and action for a long press (>1 sec)

Isn't that option only available in custom builds like KOSH's and norbusans though?, and not the daily builds.

that's right... if you download some files, your player can talk to you. if you want to give it a try, have a look at the wiki at rockbox.org. it's all explained there.

I have mine talking. BUT I don't have any record options. I just re-read the rockbox manual and its kinda vague when it comes to recording. My H320 does not do anything when I hit the rec button. I was able to make it record by going back to the iriver firmware, but that defeats my purpose of installing rockbox for my blind friend. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks to everyone for your help so far, you have all been great.

Also I don't have FM Tuner. I am using version 051130-1638....could I be using the wrong version?

I suggest you go to rockbox's irc channel and have a chat with the main developers of rockbox, they are a friendly bunch.

go to the link below and click on web client to log onto the channel,

http://www.rockbox.org/irc/

Rockbox's forum is also a better place for your issues, link below.
