Unhappy Static Noise when playing video with sound on rockbox

I downloaded the demo video file with sound from the rockbox website and the video plays but all the sound I get is just static.

I have downloaded the latest CVS build and the file is recognized.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Those files don't have audio in them. That's why you're getting static

The MPEG player WIKI is outdated so you have to encode your own files for now.

The file I downloaded was a mpg file uploaded on Newyears eve on the rockbox website and when I play the file on my PC the audio works just fine.

Just doesnt play properly on my H320 player.

Yes, I have the same problem, too. I always get white noise instead of sound when playing videos.

It seems that linuxstb made a change before commiting his work into CVS that affects coldfire targets. Unfortunately for us, he doesn't actually own an H300 or an iAudio X5 so he couldn't know about this. He is aware of this problem now and currently trying to fix it.

For the impatient and until linuxstb finds what the problem is, I patched the cvs source before the mpeg commit (31-12-06) with the patch linuxstb gave me for testing. I also patched mirak's optimisation patch and created a build.

Here, I attach a zip file containing the mpegplayer.rock that you need to replace in "/.rockbox/viewers/" and a rockbox-vid.iriver file that you need to place in the root. When you want to watch a video now you have to:

1) select the rockbox-vid.iriver file. This will make rockbox reboot into 31-12's patched firmware I made
2) select the video you want to play

Notice that this is actually a test version of mpegplayer. In other words you can't access the menu while playing videos (you can acces the menu once before the video starts buffering) and you can't exit (stop) the video unless you reset. Sound should work fine with this one though.

h300 proper video with sound.zip

I have no idea.... I mean it supposed to be working now but something gets messed up on Coldfire targets. As I said, linuxstb is aware of this and he is investigating.

Can you post also the source of the patch in the meantime?
I would like to integrate it into my x5 builds until it is fixed in CVS

UPDATE:

Seems that linuxstb is close on fixing it (it's always a work-in-progress, see?)

Quote:
14.08.03 # <linuxstb> OK, if I disable the Coldfire optimisations in libmad, mpegplayer works...
14.08.29 # <linuxstb> (with a separate audio thread). With the Coldfire optimisations, it only works if I decode audio in the main thread.

The link linuxstb provided to me is still working so I guess it's ok.

Haha! It seems that it's fixed now! That's quick progress isn't it?

2 Jan 13:36 - Dave Chapman
"Fix audio for Coldfire targets - the EMAC was being initialised in the main thread, not the audio thread. Also fix some comments and kill the video thread if the audio thread can not be created."

Smile

Yes, the new build is working ok on my H320 (Except for the A/V sync issues).

I know for the video to work ok under the iriver software it needed to be recoded to 10fps. Maybe this will needed to be done?

Congrats to the guys on fixing this issue so quickly.

Once the A/V sync problem are fixed I can then recode my videos.
