A few days ago i installed EZ wps on my computer, but initially unzipped it to a folder on my H320. Im' not entirely sure what happened, but i ended up with a " .rockbox " folder containing the " langs " folder, and in this a whole lotta folders and files with names like " $_´hwpÐó.ñÕ " and " ¬i¡j§öÑÁ.ÍÏ┬ ". I can't actually delete these files through the computer, and cannot delete many through the iRiver fw file viewer.
The player worked okay for a bit, but now it won't boot into the rockbox fw, it comes up to "scanning files" and then stays on this for a long time before freezing (i presume it has trouble scanning these files). I'm then forced to restart it using the reset button on the side of the unit. When it try booting into iRiver fw, it boots up pretty quickly, but i'm unable to play music (can't browse for the files) and movies won't load. Pictures still load fine, but the radio doesn't work - trying to go into it freezes the player. What would be my best solution to this broblem? Should i just bite the bullet and copy any irreplaceable files off it anto my computer and then format the hd? Any help would be much appreciated.

sounds like you might need to format it

sounds like you just need a clean installation of rockbox.
are you in windows XP? and you say you can't delete the files? try using unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ and then delete them and the entire .rockbox folder. then proceed with the installation of a fresh .rockbox folder and rockbox.iriver file.

I've also noticed similar issues with garbage files. Even worse, on my linux box at least, once you try and fail at deleting one of these files the entire disk goes read only... Another odd thing, after unmounting my H300, it doesn't notice that the USB cord has been unplugged for several seconds, then throws a "panic - mount = 0" or something and reboots.
Thinking back, I noticed this started happening around the same time as the CVS code to disable the USB host controller was commited, but was too impressed with the improved battery life to make much of it until recently. Looks like the USBHC code may be conflicting with UMS. |

It's not the .rockbox folder in the root directory, but a second one in the rockbox ui folder that's causing the problem
i deleted the root rockbox directory and replaced it, so now dircache has been disabled and rockbox can boot up fine, but i still can't delete the problem folder and the iRiver fw won't play music or videos. thanks for the help, tho i'll try using unlocker next rb does seem slower, too, after recent changes

Looks like i'll just have to format it. Anyone here know much about the process? I just want to be cautious here and not brick my player, as i can't really afford a new one. Thanks for the suggestion though guys

there is another thing that might work, its called "move on boot" it might work but as the iriver is an external hard drive it may not.
worth a try anyway. Kezza |

Hi,
you could also try to rename the files with the console before removing them. The file-/foldernames in the first post begin with a space character and windows has a problem to handle those files. I had a problem with a folder beginning with a space myself and i tried several different programs, but i wasn't able to remove it until i renamed it on the comandline. |

If you format you will have to hold down rec+on after the format to boot into iriver firmware because there wont be any rockbox firmware and it will just turn off each time. Dont worry about it bricking your iriver thats unlikley to happen.

"move on boot" didn't work and i don't think renaming will work, so i'll have to format it. Is it fine to just format through windows?
