[How to] make a WPS screendump
Press the A-B button to go into the menus.
Go into the Info menu.
Then into the Debug (Keep Out!) menu.
Then select Screendump to enable it.

Now go to the wps you want and plug the usb cable in.

Then unplug it.

Now bo back to the Screendump option and select it to disable it.

The screendump will now be in the root.

how long do i need to leave the usb cable plugged in? i just did it sucessfully, but i didn't know how long to wait since i thought usb mode might start up...so i waited quite a while.
any risk of hurting player if you unplug too quickly?

It's a screen shot of the Rockbox screen, so, it takes a picture of your current screen and saves it onto the root of the player.

If you look in this thread you will see that most people making a wps have supplied a screendump so you can see what they look like

H3xx Rockbox 24bit Color WPS here. No Discussion (56K Warning)

screen dumps are just black
Created a wps and tried to use screen dump as per this method and all i end up with is a black bmp. tried screen dump on the menu screens and this works. Tried other wpss some come up black and other OK. what's happening running experimental 1.04

Found a common theme. All WPSs with black bacground come out as totally black. changed background in my wps and screen dump worked.
