How do I know I have bootloader v5?

Apologies to all, espedcially needleboy, who may be irritated by ths question - and maybe rightly so.

The Rockbox faqs tell me I need to install the bootlader and RB software. No problem. I know that I need FWpatcher to modify the hex file and install this in the H340 Root folder. This is the bootloader. Then I install RB itself.

However, everyone is writing in saying "please update to bootloader v5". When I did some searching around, all I could see was something called a ".bin" file....this sounds a complicated thng.

For those with RB installed, is there a thread giving instructions on how to update bootloader? And for newbies, is there a thread that explains how you know you have the latest bootloader if you are installing for the first time?

Many thanks.
Jim

Well it's the same thing you did earlier.
It's like a firmware update. You get the fwpatcher and you load it along with the original iriver firmware.
You go to the iriver firmware, do the firmware update and when you load it should mention Bootloader v5.
Simple enough?

There are all the stickies at the top of this forum and loads of information on the rockbox site. But basically it's what planetik said above though.

It says in the top-left corner of the screen what bootloader you are running when you turn it on.

You don't need to worry about that .bin file reference. I don't actually know what that's about but its irrelevant all the same !

Apologies weatherman, I agree that was a bit out-of-order on my part. I was in a bit of a bad mood yesterday after this thread. That guy just pissed me off completely ! Anyway, sorry.

No Apology Necessary

Please.....absolutel y no apology necessary. You have all been very helpful. I realise that some questions appear to be really basic and maybe for some of the experts it must get tiresome to be feeling you are just answering the same old queries, just dressed up slightly differently.

Maybe it's just that the experts don't reralise just how freaked out us non-techies can get...there I am,, ready to take the plunge, printed instructions in front, got all me bits and bobs, then someone mentions bootloader 5 and a .bin file.......

S, no offence taken at all. And thanks.
