some rock file like pong 2. say incompatible model. Does everyone get this?

nope. it runs for me. im using rockbox h300 optimized (needleboys version) the latest one.

When I've gotten that in the past, been told that I need to download the latest firmware--that takes care of it.

Well, this is due to the new plugin update in which makes some plugins upcompatible. I think you should re-update those plugins.
