Database on Rockbox

Hi guys wonder if you can help me. I have had a good look round but can`t find anything about it.

On the Iriver firmware you can search by genre, artist, album etc, which I find very handy. Is this possible on Rockbox? And if i is can you explain how you do it.

Thanks Nigel.

I read somewhere there is a very basic and buggy implementation of the database function available for RB, but for now RB is really limited to file-tree browsing.

As long as your music is organised well into folders it shouldn't matter- many people (I being one of them ) completely ignored the database function in the iriver firmware and focused on a decent file/folder tree. If you didn't then there are some programs out there that can sort music into folders for you (I'll post a link when I find it).

Go to the Rockbox wiki and search for the tag database page. I am fairly sure that it is called TagDatabase but I am not positive.

The db actually works on the H-100 players (although does not list genre), although there are some limited bugs. It also has a search feature--great!

You have to download software first, then create the db (it takes some time, a bit longer than with Tag Database Tools), and then turn Show Files to ID3.

A few bugs, the last time I checked:

-- Players would freeze when Show Files was switched. To avoid this: turn it on through the regular (not Quick) menu screen, and then back out a screen and turn the player off, and then on again.

-- I have about 7000 songs and couldn't get the db lists to show them all. But I haven't gone back to the db in 1-2 months.

In the end, it's a decent/fine system and just needs some work and further development, as it has so much to offer!

r u talking about h100? cos i never heard about db softwares for rb. and as well i always clog my player when i try to view id3 files with the quick menu. i only try if it works on new versions of bootloaders though. although i prefer the file tree as others said.

I have an iHP-140, but I'm not aware that the db is specific to a particular model (or player, for that matter). The quick view/ID3 bug came about last month or so, and needs to be fixed--switch to ID3 as noted above, through the non-quick menu. And I think the db is not talked about much, because so many people use the file tree method.

But lots of potential for the db, and the search feature is great--find a song you remember part of the title of, or just do interesting searches.
