Big annoying thing!

I've used rockbox for about a month with a few problems, the biggest is that it takes about FIVE! minutes for it to start up... Can someone tell me how to fix it? hm.

There is something very not right - mine takes about 5-7 seconds.

Have you had problems with your hard drive prior to this, like the "0000 files" error or hard drive clicking, etc?

Do you have the latest version?
A defrag of the HDD might help.
Mine takes around 10-20 seconds to be fully up and running.

Which problem - 0000 files or hard drive clicking or both? If it's only the "0000" bug, then it might not be that bad (but it could be). If it's clicking, then it's kinda bad. That means the disk and/or the mechanisms are damaged.

The reason Rockbox is taking a long time is because it is having a really hard time reading off the hard drive. iRiver firmware doesn't have this problem because it loads from a memory chip, not the hard drive.

I think Rockbox has more work to do with the HDD. So the iRiver firmware may help a little. Are you still within the warranty period?

That's your call - 30-60 seconds vs 5 minutes.

The real issue is, if your hard drive is clicking then it's is probably physically damaged. Sooner or later it's going to fail, regardless of what firmware you use. If you are still with in the warranty period (1 year in U.S., 2 in Europe IIRC), then I'd consider having them repair or replace it. -- just be sure you mention you want an H300 replacement and not an H10.

Check in the iRiver/H300 FAQ posts on the forums - there is info there on how to contact iRiver. Being in Sweden, you might be able to send it to iRiver Europe (located in Germany), even though it was purchased in China. Just give them a ring (it seems to be more effective than email, although more expensive) and talk to them.

Technically the iRiver FW still has to read from the HDD at bootup (seeing as it doesn't have a directory cache) to read the Filetree + Contents, so technically, if the HDD is fooked, then the same thing should happen with the iRiver FW - or at least, return the 'Check HDD Connection'/'0000 Files' message ...

I'm actually beyond my 100%, "for sure" knowledge now, but if I remember my early computer classes, the directory/file structure (at least the basics) is stored in the FAT at the beginning of the drive. Unless DB function is turned on, iRiver FW might not have this problem until it starts having to access files, or browsing the file-tree. FW startup can probably be accomplished w/o reading much of the disk -- of course, it's been so long since I booted iRiver FW I can't remember when the drive spins up (and even then, it could just spin up & not read in order to be ready). I'm sure Linus knows.

But on startup, iriver FW reads every file on the disk (that is why it takes sooo long)

I had a similar problem. Rockbox either took minuits to boot, or it just failed. The HDD made all sorts of odd noises when rockbox tried to boot. If I booted the iriver firmware I got the 0000 files and folders problem.

However...

My laptop still read all the files on the HDD in USB mode and it made no noises when reading the disc in USB mode. After reinstalling the bootloader (w. new iriver firmware) and rockbox my unit is fine, back to my <10secs boot time and no clicking noises. I ran a check on the hard drive but no bad sectors or errors were found.

Anyone think it could be the bootloader thats causing it?

Oh my god... " 0000 " files... AGAIN... It did work for some minutes ago... Hm, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... Can it be problem with the iriver normal firmware? ( 1.29K ) ? Maybe it works better with another? You tell me! thanks

I reckon the HDD is causing the problems. Not the firmware or Rockbox.
I would consider a replacement unit or HDD.
I would run a disk scan from Windows, and see if it shows any disk errors or bad sectors.

yep, agree, its a harddrive agony

try low-level formatting - if your HDD has logical, not physical bads, low-level format will help for shure.

although i dont know any windows program that would have this option for a USB-storage drive. (Swissknife or PartititionMagic wont do)

anyone?
