just a lil thanks

i was skeptical at first with rockbox, it being in early stages and all. but i must say that the rockbox team has put out one awsome peice of software.
i can only imagine how much time and effort has been put into this project.

i will be donating to the project when i get a little more financially stable (just started working again and catching up on bills).

just wanted to say thank you,

agreed. i think we hear too much demanding that rockbox include certain features, and rockbox bashing. but we need to remember that the people developing are volunteering their free time to the project.

the progress they have made thus far is incredible, IMO.

so with that said, THANK YOU to the entire rockbox team. keep up the good work.

I'll second those sentiments (again )! Having said that, I have yet to try RB cuz I'm an idiot who needs to wait for the later builds...but I eagerly await....

Ever Patiently,

Seriously, if you could only understand the 3-dimensional measurements of my idiocy...wowzers, as the kids say (they...do still say that...right...?). I'm gonna hafta wait for the "RB for people as dumb as BBD" build before I'll feel confident enough.... But I can hardly wait...........

There are daily builds coming out every day, which takes time to implement. Based in that I doubt very much they are focusing more on another player.

Daily builds come out regardless whether a specific player is worked on.
...but you should know by now, not many people are working specifically on the H300's, but just because the ipod port has a lot of progress doesn't mean the H300's aren't being worked on because different people are working on different things.

I am not challenging you but I am just curious. When a daily build comes out doesn't that mean a specific player is being worked on? The daily builds are specific to the player it represents.

What happens is that during the day, people make changes to rockbox, be it for the ipod, the h300 or one of the myriad other players it supports. Sometimes, the changes affect all the supported players. Then, at the end of the day, they build the firmware for all the players, even if they weren't altered.

Oh, I see. There are a lot new features that have been added to the H3x0 rockbox nonetheless.

I think a lot of people who own ipods, choose them in the first place because of simplicity, most of them probably have never heard of rockbox or would ever have a need to install it.
I'm not saying it appllies to every ipod owner, but I believe if there was a comparison between the proportion of ipod owners inclined to install rockbox and the total number of ipod owners, vs the same scenario for iriver owners, the proportion of iriver owners who would install rockbox would be greater, than for the ipod owners.
I believe this is the case because if people wanted a feature packed player they wouldn't get an ipod in the first place, and if they don't need a feature intensive player they certainly don't need the complexities of rockbox.

I think rockbox for ipods is a waste of time, i'm sure many people with disagree but that is just how I feel.

Na.. people buy iPods because of the media hype and because it's cool and hip to have one. Why is it, that everybody thinks iPod owners are stupid? This can't be the case. Given the choice, I'm willing to bet that a percentage of iPod owners would install ROCKbox.

*waits for the iPod bashers*

I still stand by my comment about Rockbox for iPod, "pearls for swine".

However, I can imagine buying an iPod to run Rockbox on it, for the nice form factor and because it's a player that you can still buy in the stores. I wouldn't buy it to run the Apple firmware on it.

With the inflated prices of faulty iRivers these days, I can too (somewhat unfortunately). There is a big question mark about Rockbox for iP*d, though (and perhaps I'm asking the wrong person, but since I'm not registered at Rockbox.org);

On the iP*dPort page, it says;

Surely if I wiped the drive clean of any music, and then reloaded my music library in its current File Tree state, Rockbox would read the directories as well as it does on my iRiver ? Or have I missed something ?

Exactly. It's just that the Rockbox and Apple ways of storing files aren't compatible.

i believe the Rockbox-enabled iPo will act as a UMS device, allowing drag and drop file transfer. as long as you use this method, it should be ok. i'm guessing, but i'm confident.

Cheers for the quick answer Linus.

I thought so, too, Ego, but after having read that little portion of the iP*dPort page, I was a little confused - not anymore though !

At the end of the day, though, it's still an iP*d (I have no problems with the hardware inside the casing , but the outside ... well ... urrch! ) ...

Yeah, people who own ipods may not be idiots, but they certainly weren't asking for a complicated DAP when they chose it. ipods are so easy to use, that's why people like them, as if most of them are going to want to risk ruining their ipod for another firmware. I bet if you asks a sample of ipod users what "firmware" was they probably couldn't tell you.

I would prefer to see rockbox on the iaudio X5/X5L, even though I don't own one, I just think it's a more worthwhile player to develop rockbox for.

I would definitely not buy an ipod just to use rockbox on, they don't really appeal to me, some people may think they look cool, to me they look like a childs toy.

I can't believe this thread needs bumped so soon. I'm S-&-GD tired of "RB Suxxorz" threads. If you can't run it, there's 2 possibilities:

1. You're a moron and need to wait for the later builds (I fall in this category ).

2. You're doing something wrong!

RB is still in the early stages for the H300 series (and several other DAPs), so there are some less-than-noob-friendly "bugs" (I hesitated to use that word as the "problems" aren't proper bugs, but it'll hafta do, pig...it'll hafta do....). But the RB folks are working daily--for no pay or expectation thereof!!!!

I still think linus and his merry band of (*ahem*) volunteers!!!! deserve as much support as we can provide, even though we are wetting ourselves in anticipation. If you can't be patient, then just sit there and look pretty, like I am doing...well, for some of you: at least just sit there....

But to the whiny-bizzles: STFU!!!!!! It ain't like you paid money for FW support, like you did to iRiver.

Ever Apoplectic,
BBD

P.S. Grrrrr..... /me shakes fist at whiny-bizzles

Thanks for all your great work

I have just downloaded and installed the Rockbox on my H320 and have been using it for several days.

Great stuff, well done.

For a pre-release OS/software is very good.

I can play my play lists, listen to FM radio, view text files and play bejeweled in colour while listening to my music.
If I need something else I can quickly access the iriver firmware with a short reboot and keypress.

Keep up the great work, you are all worth your weight in AMD processors.

(For those who are wondering if you should try it -
as long as you are not too picky and are a bit of a tech head
this is easy to install and setup is quite easy)

For those who need hand holding, dont bother installing.
