Idiots Guide To Upgrading Rockbox

I made a simple guide to upgrade your H300 to rockbox.
It is really simple to follow and has screenshots.
Here it is:

Nice one San.. I'm an idiot.. I've been downloading various plugins, and subscribing to various MR pages.. I'll check it out right now.

EDIT: Bookmarked.. I'll read it later.. Off out.

No Problem.
Just want people to go through What I had to go through to put it on.
(I was a rockboxer simce the first day it came out for the H300)
The wiki on the rockbox site is really only for developers and is confuzing, so I made this guide.
Hope it helps some people.

You may also find the linked instructions of use, at the Rockbox site.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...RockboxInstall

Also, just to provide some assurance: the process, in the end, is much simpler than it sounds and just takes minutes and a few steps; no harder than creating and editing a letter in a word-processing program. And then all the fun starts, as you discover all the continually-changing and improving Rockbox options, and the improvements over the iRiver firmware.

Damn! San you beat me! I had one all typed up. This is better though it has pictures and stuff. And I think I was the earliest MR Rockboxer, I had it running about a week before it was relesed to the public on the Rockbox website.

Is it really worth doing yet though for those of us who do not have the tech-savvy to understand rockbox's inner workings? I personally just want the best playing experience possible. I dont want to play around with new firmware yet unless it really is worth making the transition yet..

isn't rockbox for h300 still under alpha testing? and is not yet stable?

I can't find any interface screenshot for rockbox on H300 series, can someone post it so I can have a look, and what's the advantage of moving to rockbox?

I agree with kin242, but i think i spend too much time over here because i think about trying Rockbox everytime i use my H.
If follow that guide and install the rockbox loader but keep using the original FW will i feel any difference? is it possible to delete rockbox and install a clean FW like nothing happened?
I imagine it's possible but i'd like to make sure before i try.

If the 300 firmware is like the 100, you will feel no difference if you boot up with the iRiver firmware (apart from the button press to start it up), and you indeed can eliminate all remnants of Rockbox from the player.

To remove Rockbox from your player all you need to do is delete the .rockbox folder and reflash to fresh firmware.

sorry maybe im wrong and i dont habe rb yet, but i think i read on rb faqs or instructions that to go back to iriver fw u first have to put a clean h300.hex file in the root, then to firmware upgrade, and after that to remove all the rb files (rockbox.iriver and the .rockbox folder).

am i wrong?

another thing:
as i said im not very practical with rb, but i read the instructions on the rb site and thought to understand that it couldnt be possible to see coloured screens cos it uses 1 bit (BnW) or 2 (grey scale). but this image is i color, isnt it?
moreover they say rockboy dont work or works slowly, right?
http://img476.imageshack.us/my.php?i...img40943xa.jpg?

PS i'm not tryin to cause problems or to complain, i'd just like to know the thing before i upgrade to rb...
btw great job san, as usual

WHAT?!? The one on the Rockbox site is absolutely PERFECT!

(*Febs wrote the ManualRockboxInstall page on the Rockbox site)

In all seriousness, if San's page helps people get up and running, I'm all for it. Nice work San.

It's possible to have color on the WPS screen on the H300 series, and in fact, the WPS screen will be in color as soon as someone decides to update the WPS code to support color. Remember, the H300 series is the first color platform to which Rockbox has been ported, and it has been available on the H300 for under two weeks. Give it time, and I'm sure that support for color will be implemented.

Different people take in information differently. A diversity of accurate sources can only be a good thing....
