Rockbox & H3Mod firmware?

Hi,
I'm assume it is safe to load rockbox on to a H340 using firmware modded with H3MOd? Presumably the bootloader doesn't mind that the iriver firmware has been modified?

Note the words "assume" and "presume" above, in other words I really don't know! - that is why i'm asking here. Has anybody done this? Can anyone confirm that rockbox is entirely independent of the pre-installed firmware?
Thanks
-eogmp3

I believe you have to patch the firmware with fwpacther THEN run it through H3mod..

There are a few people saying they have done it. But is it safe? Nobody is sure about that yet, which is why the Rockbox page says it is for developers only.

It should be safe to patch skined firmware. H3mod only changes images, and does not alter the position of anything in the firmware.

Does the rockbox site say anyting specifically about using firmware already modded with H3Mod? I didn't see it.

yep, i knew if i said it 'will be safe' someone would brick their player

But seriously, people were using skinned firmware with the old h100 bootloaders and i dont recall any problems being mentioned.

I suppose I will be a test subject. I shall patch my skinned firmware as soon as rockbox plays music ok. Which will be soon hopefully.....

I did it. First you have to use fwpatcher with the unaltered firmware, ie. the one straight from iRiver. Then load rockbox and all that. Then go in and make a new skin with h3mod, overwrite the fwpatched firmware, and load that firmware up. Worked fine.

i rockboxed my player with the original iriver firmware like it said and that worked alright. though i wanted to put my modded skin pack onto it instead. though when i h3modded it and went to fwpatch it, the patcher said that it was unrecognisable.

any insight on this matter?

cheers
