Bootloader problem - any way of fixing?

Hi there

UnhappyIt starting doing this 2-3 weeks ago. I'm unsure whether it's a hardware prob with the iriver, but I'm fairly certain it is not my PC because it no longer boots on my work PC either.

When plugged in, the iriver tells me it is in USB mode, but the PC either does not recognise the player at all, or, if I go to My Computer, it crashes the window (it returns a 'not responding' message). The moment I unplug the player, it uncrashes the window. This happens on both my work PC and my PC at home.

There is a twist in the tale: my friend with an Archos mounted me (so to speak) and was able to view my files. His computer, which runs Linux, was also able to interact naturally with my h140.

What's the solution? The player seems to work fine otherwise, all I want is to be able to get my files on and off!

Oh, one last thing: I tried to get it to connect in the original firmware with the same problem.


Is the only way out to run a limited version of Linux on my PC? Surely that would have its own problems...

Can anyone help me with this curious query? Has there been some update to windows that's invalidated my connection?

Here's a little list of things I'd try (in no particular order) ....

1)Try another usb cable.

2)Try connecting your player to your pc and then turn the player on , to see if it will connect in the rockbox "Bootloader usb mode".

3)You could also try connecting your player (turned on and then boot up you PC and see if it will force a disc check (I'm pretty sure my old win2000 pc used to do this but don't know about xp or vista)

4) Reseat your hard drive (remove and refit) See npswimdudes excellent hard drive replacement tutorial for instructions http://www.misticriver.net/forums/player-faqs/50898-h1xx-h3xx-series-faqs-post199333.html#post 199333

5)Try removing the rear cover from you player and apply a small amount of pressure to the daughter board while connecting the player, )to check if you have a connection problem between the two boards).

6)Back up your files with your friends linux machine and format your player either with the format function in your player or by using swissknife CompuApps, Inc. - Download Swissknife (if it will recognise it) incase you have some dodgy file(s) or something .

Hope one of those will help .

EDIT: If you do a search for " recognised " in the h1xx forms you will find a load of threads which may be of use.

I have the same problem with my H320. I've tried EVERYTHING!. Switched Rockbox version, format HDD, tried different PC's and USB cables, etc. Nothing seems to help. I know I screwed it up when I unplug the USB while downloading data. After that the whole thing went crazy! I was
able to connect to my PC for a while, but now even Windows XP crush every time I connect my device. Some mentioned trying to format the H320 HDD connecting to another PC but I have problem understanding how to attach it to the other PC. That could be a great solution. Maybe that can help you too, if you know how to do it. Please let me know if you have found any way to fix this problem. Thank you and good luck with your H140!............... ..

there seems to be a few H320 folks which had similar issues with Vista not recognising their DAP's, the solution there was to point the OS to load the drivers required from the system32 file, this fixed the problem there, I wonder if the same thing would benefit you, the trick is to somehow get the hardware wizard to reinstall the DAP.

edit: apparently the drivers in xp for dap's are stored in;

C\windows\system32\d rivers\wpdusb.sys

in device manager reload the drivers from that destination, ( I haven't had this issue myself, this is what I glean from google).

Also you could try deleting your USB ports from Device Manager, then rebooting your PC.

Most distributions of Linux come as a Live CD, which is a bootable CD that lets you try out Linux before you install it. I've done it with my new laptop and had no problems.
