Unhappy Failed firmware upgrade H140

Hi, everybody
I am entusiastic Iriver owner but now really sad.

I was upgrading firmware but after 20 minutes it didn't finish so I stopped.
Now when I try to turn it on, it stops on the Iriver logo.

When I boot in RB it stops in the first page and shows this:

Rock box boot loader
Version 6
Batt: 3.76V
Loading firmware
Length: 55FA0
Checksum: 1A303B3
Model name: h120
Sum: 1A303B3
Result: 0

I can boot it in USB mode and the HD works properly.

My question is: is it possible to reinstall firmware via usb with the player in this condition?

Advanced thanks to everybody will help me.

Otello

ps sorry for my bad english, I'm italian.

to help you we need more information,

1). which firmware were you upgrading, Rockbox's or irivers?.

2). Did you have rockbox working on your player before the firmware upgrade ?.

Hi Dunno,

firmware was the iriver one.

The problem was during flashing the modified ihp 120.hex file.

Rockbox was installed by the precedent owner.

It was working before my attempt.

try the following

1). make sure that your player is OFF. then,
2). press the record button, hold that in, and simultaneously press the play button, release both buttons after a few seconds.

it should boot into irivers firmware if rockbox was working before, and if the flash is intact.

As a desperate solution you could try to boot the iriver firmware without the disk, and see if you get the HD connection error. After that error it should proceed to the main screen (which you can do nothing), then turn it off and reattach the disk. Finally reboot into original firmware.

A very long shot, but in order to flash your unit again you either need to boot one of the two firmwares.

PS: Have you tried to format the HD?

I think the flash is corrupted.

One step at a time,

Backup your HDD before formating your players HDD, and if you do decide to format the disk ensure that its formatted to FAT32, windows cannot format HDD's greater than 32gigs, so you would need a third party application to do so, but...... lets do this thing one step at a time

Yes I also think that your flash is corrupted, the only way to fix this is to send it to iriver for reflashing, which would be easy for them to do. it'll cost you a bit but better than sitting with a brick.

yours is the first case of a bricked H140 due to flashing of the bootloader, very strange.

could you tell us which instructions you were following ?

Hi Dunno thanx for your help

the hold switch is off

I simply followed instruction on the rockbox.org and iriver.com

after modified the ihp 120.hex I copied it into the root and after I started flashing with the iriver os. The flashing kept more than 20 minutes and finnally I stopped the process. I think the damage was already done before I stopped.

I think the unique solution is to send it in Germany for reflashing.

Otello

when you get your unit back, and f you want to try again, let us know and I'll post my modified .hex file for you, or in the Rockbox forum ask for someone to paste the modified .hex file for you.

Hope that the repair goes quickly for you.

Just as a note, if it took 20 minutes to flash, the problem isn't the .hex file.

Plug it into your pc and do a scan disk, perhaps there is a problem with your HD which was caused by the flashing process, its a long shot but well worth a try.

Otello, after lengthy discussions with the developers, the conclusion is that you might have bought a Frankensteined player, one which was put together from several players, it might be possible that the motherboard is a H110/115 series and a H140 HD was fitted to it, that could cause the problem that you're having.
In future, in your case, Its important that you establish what player you have before attempting to flash the Bootloader.

Talking Player came back

Hi guys

my player came back after repair, spent 40 euros, in the invoice the problem is described as: Power IC, B to B power IC, Battery, system recovery grant.

Now I have reinstalled Rockbox firmware and bootloader, everything is working great

Thanks to all of you.

Bye.

Sorry to undead this thread, but I have the EXACT same problem. I had an issue with the bat running down sooner than before after updating from 2007 Q1 build to recent build of Rockbox. One morning the player wouldn't boot into rockbox so I flashed the firmware again and ....well, go back to the original post!

Rockbox boot loader
Version 6
Batt: 3.89v
Loading Firmware
Length 5F9D4
Checksum: 1DD9182
Model Name: H120
Sum: 1DD9182
Result: 0

Maybe i screwed up because i have a H140 NOT a 120

I take it you've tried to boot into the iriver firmware? (holding in the record button when turning on the player?)

now im in another pickle lol, ive installed the korean firmware but the one I had before was from korea but in english, this one isnt, doh! cant read the symbols, boots ok, what do I do now?
as I tried to put some old iriver firmware back on but cant navigate to upgrade firmware bit oops

Currently managed to find fw1.66 USA by googling it, its now sitting in the root along with folders: SYSTEM, and RECYCLER , ihp_120.hex

when i hit menu/navi on remote it shows an open folder followed by korean symbols looks wrong, no other navigation possible

Heres a guide to get you to the firmware upgrade. Assuming the korean firmware has the same navigation as US ver 1.66.
In the iriver firmware - Do one long click (menu) followed by one short click (general), navi down six , then do one short click (firmware upgrade) one left (yes) then one short click (upgrading).
Make sure the battery is charged and the charger is plugged in .

thanks jumbuck BUT "I tried to put some old iriver firmware back on but ""cant navigate"" to upgrade firmware bit oops" what ever i press on the remote and thats all i can see because my SCREEN is broken

ok The Remote Screen says IRIVER 1.66K on bootup , it shows one track in the harddrive, graphics ok on
remote BUT as soon as i press anything I get an Open Folder Icon and some crashed Korean text..nothing else works after this point , loads up as a harddrive ok, have put the latest US firmware in but cant execute it.. maybe rockboxing might might be a way of tricking it?
I dont mind rockboxing if it means i can get it going.. need a new screen as well lol..thanks for your help!
