Is it worth updating

Hi Everyone,

I have been away from the Rockbox scene for quite a while and now want to catch up a bit but am a bit out of touch now.

I have been using Rockbox on my iRiver iHP120 since the very early releases and regularly updated with the daily builds up until late 2006. At that point I had a very stable system which did just about everything that I wanted it to do. It didn't lock up, playback quality was good, gapless playback worked fine and the user interface was much improved.

So, at that point I stopped updating it and gradually drifted away from MisticRiver and the Rockbox scene. My HP120 is currently running with bootloader v6 and CVS 061011.

What I would like to know is what are the major changes since then and what benefits would I see if I updated to the latest build. I don't believe in updating firmware just for the sake of it but if I would see certain benefits then that's another matter.

Many thanks

Russell

I'm still running my H120 on June 2006 build...I only use it to play music and because of the monochrome screen, I've not bothered updating. Also it has worked flawlessly...another good reason in my book!

there have been numerous bug fixes and menu improvements along the way, I suggest you go to Rockboxe's site and view the changelogs.

Basically, check out the MajorChanges page in the Rockbox wiki. If you see something you like, update, if you don't, don't bother.

Thanks for the replies guy's,

I've had a look at the changelog in the Rockbox wiki and there is nothing there that really interests me. I'm not interested in the games etc, I just want it to play back my MP3 and OGG files with the best possible quality and gapless, which it allready does.

In view of this I think I will leave my player as is.

Thanks once again

Russell

I like the newest version. The menus seem easier to navigate.

Assuming the menu layout is exactly the same across the board, I'd also say they've laid the menus out a lot more friendly recently than older builds.

Wasn't file list scrolling speed also improved since then, to allow the use of a greater speed? A nice feature.

Plus the random album advance feature (via plug-in)--a favorite!

I check the daily changes when I have a minute, and if any affect my H140, I upgrade. Thus I update rather often. I find Rockbox to evolve quite nicely, so for the handful of seconds it takes to unzip and copy the new folder, it's well worth it.
