Complete rework of the grayscale library: (1) Implemented the new rockbox graphics api. (2) Added buffered mode, and implemented most drawing functions for buffered mode only. Buffered mode will ease implementation of animated graphics. Some functions are additionally provided as unbuffered versions (drawing grayscale bitmaps, scrolling) since unbuffered mode is better suited for non-animated graphics (JPEG viewer, mandelbrot) and saves some RAM, which is important on Archos. (3) Put all functions in a couple of source files, no more one-function-per-files. This became possible since sectioned compilation for the plugin library and appropriate linking for the pluginswas introduced, otherwise the binaries would be bloated by unused functions.
Grayscale support even better

Seems like another productive day:

1. Totally reworked grayscale graphics library supporting double buffering. This should allow rockbox to do stuff like displaying animations much better. There appears to be a mandelbrot plugin for maybe fractal visualisation?

2. Optimisation of dsp.c resulting in better decoding performance for vorbis and mp3.

3. Reworked peak metering code to hopefully make it more accurate.

33-level grayscale has been implemented. Great thanks to Jens Arnold (amiconn) for this piece of work! Note that this is only available for the plugins, because it requires the CPU to be at a constant level (120MHz), so no album art in WPS (sorry people).

Obligatory Lena sample attached. You'll have to excuse the poor quality - it really doesn't do it justice.

2005-08-08: We will have a Feature Freeze starting on August 22nd, aiming at releasing Rockbox 2.5 at September 5.

From the Email Archives:
From: Daniel Stenberg <daniel_at_rockbox.o rg>
Date: 2005-08-08

Hi

In order to really push forward against a 2.5 release, we just decided (see
IRC logs for details) to use the good old formula we've used in the past:

Starting Monday the 22nd of August, we have a Feature Freeze.

Starting Monday the 22nd of August, no new features shall be committed by any
comitter - only bug fixes!

Starting Monday the 22nd of August, we work hard on fixing the known bugs and
stay away from adding new things.

Then, if things go well, if we get lots of daring people to test the dailies
during this period, we release Rockbox 2.5 roughly two weeks after that.
Around Monday the 5th of September.

With a bit of luck and lots of hard work, the 5th of September 2005 shall be a
grand day.

This also means that if you have any remaining things you want added before
the release, you MUST make sure to commit it before the 22nd of August, or it
will be left to get into the next release (be it 2.6 or 3.0).

Now, make sure you and your fellow Rockbox CVS committer reads this and knows
about this. It will be painful to have to revert any occasional wild commits
that violate this.

---------------

Looks like we might see a Rockbox with "Official" iriver support soon.

From the developer comments, this seems to apply to the Archos Rockbox and not the iRiver port, although it affects the iRiver port to the extent there are commonalities.

Indeed. The release will only be for the devices supported by the 2.4 release (Archos Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio). The freeze will be for all code though, so the time from Aug. 22nd to Sep. 5th will not see any new features for iriver either - only bug fixes.

A release with support for iriver will without doubt happen very soon after the iriver port is "complete".

Gentlemen, we have FM Radio.

No presets yet though, needs some changes in button-handling.

FM recording for iRiver iHP-100 series is true!!!

Can you believe this? I made a small test and did a litle recording using the FM radio. It worked very well, though it was a 7 seconds recording....!

Start radio. Exit the screen by pressing play. Enter the recording screen (info > debug > pcm recording), select line-in as input. Record!

LAME gapless support seems perfect at last. At least in all the files I tried that had proper enc_delay and enc_padding values

LinusN committed a fix this morning that address the crash that happened occasionally at the end of tracks. While the fix should elimate the crashing issue, it may cause a slight pop between tracks until someone codes an alternative way to mute between tracks without triggering the crash.

Edit: Here is Linus' description of the patch:

Quote:
Removed the uda1380_mute() calls, since they were called in interrupt context, which could lead to a big crash. This will reintroduce a slight pop when starting/stopping playbac, and when switching tracks.

Excellent news for the blind, or people using their iriver in the car:

Initial support for Voice UI has just been committed.

There has just been a feature freeze, so that rockbox version 2.5 for archos and other players (excluding iRiver) can be released with most of existing bugs fixed. I posted this just to let you know, so that there will be no complaints when no features will have been added in the next 2 weeks (I believe the freeze ends on september 5th) - but hopefully a lot of bugs will be fixed during the freeze which is good news.

News flash:

Conditional images now are possible in Rockbox. Which means that you can place images you create anywhere you want on the What's Playing Screen, to appear on the existence of another operating event.

This opens the creativity flood gates even further (and might necessitate a WPS Competition--Part II).

Thanks, devs!
