Significant RockBox Update

I truly don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but saw this update on the RockBox site today:

Write a boot loader
The idea is to write a tiny boot loader that coexists with the original firmware in flash. The loader checks for a button (currently the Record button) and loads Rockbox from disk if it is pushed. If not, it starts the original iRiver firmware. Actually, it is currently the other way around, as it is inconvenient for the developer to push the record button each time.

Progress: Done

The boot loader can now load and run Rockbox. Development can now begin for real. Next task should be to include MiniMon? in the loader, to be able to reflash without connecting a BDM emulator.

This, to me, is a major milestone. Kudos to the RockBox team!!!

(Note to mods: Thanks for moving this to the appropriate place. Guess it's old news, though . . . )

The ATA driver for the hard drive is already working, so is the button driver. We haven't worked anything on the audio parts though.

Don't hold your breath. RealAudio is a closed format.

Hmm... USB interface... firmware controlled server/client function... would TCP/IP functionality over the USB interface be possible for streaming audio?!
Unfortunately, the USB chip in the H100 is an ATA slave device only. We can't make it operate in any other way. The EU version of the H300 might offer some possibilities though.

Fascinating stuff anyway, congrats & thanks to the Rockbox team for the progress!
Thanks!

Last night I booted Rockbox on the H120 for the first time with the new bootloader. Needless to say, it crashed right after showing the logo and loading the settings.

It will be a while before we can play music, but the rest of the stuff will probably work pretty soon.

I sincerely hope we're talking about months or even weeks. It all depends on how much time we can devote to this. But since the boot loader is working, we are now several people that can work on it and not just me.

Stay tuned.

Yes, Rockbox now runs fine on my H120. I can browse directories, and just to tease you, I just deleted a whole directory of MP3 files with Rockbox.

I can do almost everything but play music.

The plugins don't yet work, so there are no games.

I'm not sure if our Vorbis implementation would be any more efficient than theirs. We want as many formats as we can get. First would probably be WAV, MP3, FLAC and Vorbis.

There seems to have been a lot of activity over the last few days... which is definately good news.

It wouldn't be fair to ask for a timescale, I'm guessing that getting audio playback will be one of the final few major hurdles.

No music playback but you can navigate, play with settings and plays games.

Do *NOT* install this if you don't wanna get burned. It might screwup your player. I personally have not tested it and am unsure how to load it anyhow. I am going to wait for a proper release with most functionality working.

I advise you to do so too!

But if you are very brave and want to risk it go ahead and give us some feedback like screenshots etc

On the Rockbox site it says USB is 10% done, that it detects. If I flash Rockbox, is there enough USB support to actually transfer the iRiver firmware back and reflash it?

Good question. But from what I know you can boot to original firmware and RockBox is just a boot loader? I would wait for Linus maybe to tell you what is safe to do or not. I am not going to recommend anyone install it right now. But if you KNOW what you are doing feel free. AT YOUR OWN RISK!

okay, so i guess i'll give a quick little update...
1. the bootloader is stable, no one has managed to brick their iHP with it yet...
2. when you flash it, you can still boot up with the normal firmware (which means you can reflash as well)
3. you do have to have some linux experience to really get it working and understand how to change things
4. besides playing games, it really has no useful functionality

now the playing games just got many excited!!!

is there a browser function that would allow copying and pasting of a firmware file from sub-directories on the fly? if this is the case you could have the games-enabled rockbox and normal music firmware in separate directories, copy and paste the one you wont into the root, and upgrade firmware, giving you the choice of games or music

There is no need for that. The iRiver firmware is still in the flash. To start the original firmware, just hold the REC button when you turn it on.
