Why the radio works while the DAP is connected to the computer?

I'd suspect it's because the usb connection turns the control of the hd over to the host computer. I'm not really sure about this though - perhaps more knowledgeable persons will chime in?

That's correct, Rockbox does not have control of the hard drive while connected to USB.
