Question Lost on Misticriver
Hi there - I would have tried directing these questions to the appropriate thead but I would no idea which ones? Will be happy if someone will enlighten me...

Can anyone give me an idea of how to use 'builds'? I flashed my H140 to Rockbox about 6 months ago, am totally loving it but feel I'm missing out on the new developments - I don't know how to add small changes to my firmware (I like it overall though and wouldn't go back for the world) - which is I guess the point of open source right?

I'd like to know if there's any way of:

1. Telling Rockbox to crossfade only when the music gets to a certain dB (so music doesn't too audibly overlap) - files differ greatly in how they fade out, I've noticed.

2. Creating a kind of normalization feature (so that Rockbox perhaps recognises when a loud song is to follow and caps the volume a bit)? The alternative of retagging/normalizing files themselves just doesn't bear thinking about!

3. Getting the moon on a stick

Are any of these features in recent builds (apart from the last one of course)?

Well, wouldn't I have to retag every time I put new files on that way? Plus I have lots of WAV files that don't do tags, right?

You'd just have to tag the new files as you put them on, not that difficult. Using a decent ripper, many do replaygain tagging for you.

As for WAVs, there's absolutely no reason, EVER to have WAV files on your player unless you're trying to transport them from point A to point B, and point B doesn't have any lossless decoders.

FLAC, ALAC, SHN, and wavpack (lossless version) all offer much better alternatives to WAV. They're all full lossless (meaning you can get the original WAV back), average being about 2/3 to 3/4 the size of WAV, giving you more space, and they support tagging. My personal suggestion would be FLAC.

OK, Llorean, I'll look into tagging them, I suppose if I could replaygain them without losing any important info or quality then there would be no problem - any idea of a good programme in that case?

Also, same question about encoders - are there any good flac encoders? We're talking bulk conversions here!!

Well, as long as you go Replaygain, and NOT MP3 gain, it's *just* tags, so the audio itself is not altered in any way (except of course the gain adjustment while it's played, but if you turn off the replaygain feature in any player, you'll hear the file exactly as it is without the tags).

If you're on windows, I highly suggest Foobar2000.

One last question (I do tend to ask questions here and then disappear contented for about 6 months, so don't worry about that):

Can anyone tell me a good prog to encode files into flac (I didn't even know Rockbox supported flac, wahey!)??

That depends, are we talking ripping to FLAC or transcoding?
If it's transcoding, what format would the source files be?

They're WAVs. I don't know the diff between encoding and transcoding, so I can't really comment!

Transcoding is the name given to the process of converting from from one music format to another - if dealing with a lossy source, it's a very bad move.

However, in your case, as your source is WAV, you'll be fine.
If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to just use the FLAC encoder, you shouldn't need anything else. But, it might be easier to use a proper program like dBpoweramp or Foobar.

Aha, so I could do it with Foobar. Cool, I've got Cooledit and that's pretty good for batch converts but doesn't support Flac (or so I believe)!

Over a year ago, I asked if an intelligent crossfader could be implemented in RockBox. I'm no programmer, but it seems like it should be an easy task to analyze the output volume and initiate the crossfade when it goes below a certain level. It would only have to look at the last 10 or 20 seconds of a track. But unfortunately, it appears that the H-series hardware does not allow this. You would think that a device that is designed to play music would would be able to analyze the output volume.

You're right Tech, it does seem a great loss but then there is so much about Rockbox that's good it seems churlish to want more!

Is there no way we could prod the powers that be into providing this?

Nice to know I'm not the only one who's thought of this!
