Enthusiasm and slight disappointment (Tuner)
I have tested Rockbox for some days now. At first I was a bit sceptical, but that has gone completely. Boot speed, even with TagCache and some thousand files, is just unbelievable, and I still wonder why iriver couldn't implement a solution of similar speed. No degradation of sound quality detected so far, no crashes, and I am enthusiastic about those countless options to configure the iriver. However, as a user of the FM tuner, I found that the playback volume is much too low. I went to the Rockbox site, did a search for that problem, nothing came up, so I wrote a bug report. The reaction of the Rockbox crew was disappointing. A few hours after I had written the report, it had disappeared from the bug list, and I got two e-mails. One said that there was a second bug report of almost identical content. Correct, but the search couldn't find it, and it was filed July 17, priority low, and it hasn't even assigned to anybody in the meantime yet. The second e-mail said that one of the project managers denied to deal with that problem at all.
My personal opinion is: The main purpose of a player is to produce decent sound, so a sound related problem should not be tagged 'low priority' - especially if the original firmware does the job much better. We have a backlight that can be dimmed at different speeds, countless optical gimmicks, but an obvious sound problem doesn't even get assigned to get a solution. Rockbox already has countless features, more or less useful, so I wonder what they are currently working on... What can be done to persuade the Rockbox crew to solve the problem? Maybe more people should contact them, even those who use the FM tuner occasionally only. Horst |

Well if you are not happy with it you can always use the iriver firmware....

The rockbox developers generally work on what they want to work on, being opensource and not contracted or obligated by users entitles them to do as they please, they do try to reslove playback bugs asap, and to my knowledge they are very quick to resolve codec playback bugs, the FM radio is another story, not many of them really have much interest in FM radio, hence the lukewarm approach to your bug and the basic look of the FM WPS.
From what I can deduce from reading the irc logs, they are very busy, with new players, trying to sort out existing bugs and adding new features or patches. so the FM radio part is not a high priority. I am in no way belittling their efforts here, I think they do a great job, bear in mind that most of them do have Daily jobs AND Families, rockbox is a hobby which they work on when they have spare time.
