Creating New Fonts
I want to convert my favourite ttf files in windows to fnt files for rockbox. I've done some searching on this, and I keep hitting a dead end, perhaps due to my limited comprehension of computer programming.
The wiki does not address this, and neither do any threads I could find here. Basically they say you have to convert the ttf to a bdf font, and then convert the bdf to fnt. The problem is I can't find any utility that will convert ttf to bdf in windows, aside from FONmaker which costs $100. Everyone keeps saying "just convert your ttf to bdf" but no one explains how this is to be done! As far as I can tell the oft cited program ttf2bdf is for linux only. Anyone care to enlighten the lowly masses on how to go from ttf to rockbox compatible fnt? THanks! |

Argh - how do I use otf2bdf?? The documentation implies all kinds of knowledge I don't have. I assume I need freetype 2. I have no clue how to use that either, though it's installed. Do I need cygwin? I have that installed and have used it to make new boot logos. Where do I put otf2bdf? I'm talking about in windows. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can try using a TTF to BDF converter. Beyond this, I have no idea what to do.

And that would be useful on an H100 why?
P.S. On color Rockbox platforms, you can change the foreground color. |

otf2bdf is the same thing as ttf to bdf, just more recent version. Do you have any idea how to use it? I put in in cygwin and it can start up but it needs a freetype library. I managed to get that also, but I don't know where to put it in order for it to acknowledge it - it keeps telling me it can't find the library. |

I tried playing with fonts and conversion a year ago and the pain was considerable (no font-ist or developer here). Instead, I asked around and further fonts were made available for use. Still not as extensive as I would like (I really was looking for a larger but not too-large font for use in the car, and the fonts tended to jump around from a medium to large size when I needed a medium-large--the story of my life), but extremely helpful and useful.
Check it out, if you haven't done so. http://rasher.dk/rockbox/fonts/ |

Thanks Mike - I did check that out and got a few, but of course it's more fun to use your own faves - it was a pain in the butt but we figure out how to do it - check out this thread
