Hello there. I have had Rockbox on my h120 for about 8 months now and have had very few problems with it. Unfortunatly luck ran out and I've got one. All my songs are mp3 files, most at 192kbps or above. Any build before 3/23 works fine, any build after that just gives a "codec failure" message whenever a song tries to play. Then it skips to the next song, but again no sound only the codec failure message. When I go back to the 3/23 build, everything plays fine. What gives? Has anyone else encountered this?

Yes, I have this at random times after updating. Usually, deleting rockbox/codecs and installing the build a second time did the trick for me.
If that doesn't help, try to reset your settings (via the main menu). If that doesn't help, I have no clue at the moment |

When you do an update, make sure to overwrite both rockbox.iriver and the .rockbox directory. If you don't you are likely to see something like what you're getting. Basically it means the mp3 decoder that Rockbox is trying to load is too old for the Rockbox kernel you're using.

Okay so I deleted the rockbox directory and the rockbox.iriver file, installed the latest daily build from scratch, and viola it works. But since I didn't save the old files I lost all of my wps and cfg files. Damn. Guess I'll know better next time.

Terkel, rename your .rockbox directory to something like .rockbox-old and then install a new build. See if that clears up your problems. (You could also delete the .rockbox folder in its entirety, but renaming it allows you to install a completely fresh build without losing any .cfg settings, .wps files, etc. that you may have saved.)

I am having this problem too. I think it has to do with some of the files being labeled "read only" in the .rockbox folder. I'll let you know how it works out.
So far, when I update the settings, some of the files become labeled "read only." Is this supposed to happen? Last edited by quiet_guy : March 29th, 2006 at 02:30 PM. |

Wow - I came in here to post something similar and voila - here y'all are!
However, mine is a slight variation on this - it works FINE until after I've recorded something (in either RB or iRiver)... THEN it prompts the "codec failure" message and behaviour exactly as described above and doesn't recover unless RB is reinstalled. I'll try reloading according to the method outlined and see if that helps and report back. BTW, the recording is always fine, and playable if I boot to iRiver (as are all other files). It's only in RB that they won't play. |

I would suggest you making sure you have the latest Bootloader v4 and even v5 had a number of bugs fixed in current version.
Also as the code develops further along I see a lot of people getting minor problems with their DAP's that have had RB on them for quite some time --- that are usually fixed with a FULL reinstall (including reflashing) or RB on their DAP's. I'm sure that if you already are running RB you know how to do this, but they're are a number of guides out there to help you.

Reinstall the build, but there's no need to reflash if you have the latest bootloader installed.

Ok, definitely a problem I need hlep with. Have reloaded yet again. It works fine UNTIL I record something overa bout 20 minutes, at which point when I try to play anything back - Codec failure. So... what to do? TIA.
