A question about text editing in Rockbox

I already noticed that you can (re)name files etc. by going in the File Menu. When I choose for instance Rename I go to the text editor and I can type a (new) name.
However when I press the A-B button when I am in the text editor, I get another screen with letters and characters. What is the purpose of that screen ? It is not possible to choose letters or characters there and the only thing I can do there is move the cursor in the name/text. Is that also the only purpose ?
