The true DB scan function is only available in stock iRiver firmware. This feature, however, is very poorly implemented and is generally recomended against. There is no similar function in RockBox to my knowledge. What purpose do you have for a function like this anyways? I've never heard of anyone actually using it...

There is a TagDatabase which results in a similar thing to DBscan on iRiver, you can then browse by artist, album, song, search, but its not that well implemented yet. A tagcache update is being worked on and hopefully will not be too long coming.

TagCache isn't scheduled until the 3.1 release next November, although I imagine it will be available much sooner as a patch.

The ReleaseToDO page on the rockbox wiki suggests tagcache is intended for version 3.0 release in May, see the third bullet point in 'release critical features':
Quote:
Disable Tag DB / runtime DB and replace with tagcache (runtime DB / song ratings not included in this release)
Here's hoping . . .

The tagcache is coming a LOT sooner than November. Slasheri was saying that it's almost ready to commit in irc today...

The tagscan is hardly worth it, IMHO. It takes forever to boot up, and for those with music already alphabetized/organized in some fashion, it seems a bit redundant. It is nice they implemented it for people whose organization of music is more eclectic, though.

it takes forever to boot up the first time only, due to it having to scan the entire database, thereafter its operation normal.

This whole thing is still under development (beta, buggy) and is NOT THE FINAL realease version, that is what the v 3.0 announcement is all about.

I'm yet to get mine working; whenever I try to update the cache it crashes with a *PANIC* and the player shuts off. I'll try a CVS build without patches- that might work.
