Unclassifiable problems with my H-140!

Hi,

I am not sure how to begin describing this, but I'll try...

I have been using Rockbox since early August and I have not encountered any bugs for a long time (apart from the 'recording' problem I mentioned a couple of weeks ago). I had last updated the firmware yesterday and it seemed fine. I had it connected to my PC via USB all day today and removed it to take it home (I even used the USB disconnect icon in the system tray for once). Anyway, when I unplugged it and it booted up, I found that it was doing all kinds of unexpected things. The joystick was causing random movements, and sometimes repeatedly going in the wrong direction. i.e. I was in the root of my player and pressed down. It acted as if I had pressed 'right' repeatedly and played the first file in the first folder...

Whenever Rockbox randomly played a file for me it would crash. No sound would be heard. The ID3 tags were not displayed- just the filename. Stop would not power the player down. I had to do a hard reset.

This happened about 4 times in a row. At one point I even saw a 'I03: AddrErr' (at least I think it was this error - I didn't write it down; sorry) which I haven't seen for months.

I then decided to update it to the latest firmware. This made no difference. I then upgraded to the firmware from last week that I had used plenty of times. Also made no difference. I deleted all Rockbox files from my player... made no diffference.

The only way I could get it to work again was by (somehow) managing to get the player to power down when the STOP button actually did what it was supposed to. When it was powered down I booted the iRiver firmware just to check it worked (it did). I then shut down and booted the Rockbox firmware.

It now seems to work.

I am about to try reinstalling the latest daily build. I am a bit freaked because this may be a problem with my player.

It may be worth pointing out that I completely emptied the battery last night whilst running Rockbox - it started acting very strange as the battery approached empty - it became slow, unresponsive and the screen started flickering. I then charged it fully overnight. It seemed fine in the morning.

Weird (worrying) stuff....

I do not believe that musichound was being rude at all. I think that he was simply suggesting that you might try the reset button on the player to address your problem.

I am sure you are right. The only reason I made that comment is because my original post says that I tried to reset the player several times in a row. In any case, life is too short for pointless arguments and besides, this is one of the few internet communities I belong to where arguments don't seem to happen on an hourly basis.

After each reset it showed the same problems. I had to power the player down to make it go away - and that was not easy given that the buttons were either not responding or (as happened many times) as soon as the player booted, it would play the first file in the first folder and crash immediately. In fact, I am not entirely sure why the Stop button worked that one time - maye I got lucky.

Sorry, I overlooked that you pressed the reset button. From the symptons it appeared that is what was needed. The only thing I can suggest right now is to to operate it with Iriver firmware only with absolutely no Rockbox installed. If it still doesn't work properly this should isolate it down to a hardware issue.

If I could think of any other suggestions I will let you know.

When I managed to power it down, the first thing I did was reboot using the iRiver firmware. Boy it is ugly . That worked fine. I powered down and rebooted using Rockbox and that (predicatably) also worked fine.

Oh well. Everybody has bad days and I guess that yesterday was my H-140's turn. It is much better behaved today. Must have been something it ate.
