Man! Rockbox kicks ass!
Sorry. Couldn't resist. It does look really cool though!

Will be interesting to see how many new features are available thru Rockbox. Will the project be able to correct the more basic issues we all have raised?
-- OTF playlists -- gapless play -- no 52-character filename limit for the db / a better db -- faster scrolling of song titles -- faster/dynamic/improved scrolling thru song title/artist/album/genre lists -- adjustable fonts/screens, to make better use of the screen real estate. I assume that clock-like features can't be added (such as the player starting at a set time, like an alarm clock)? Or am I wrong? For example, the player can be set to go off after a set amount of time--could that be adjusted so that the player turns ON after a set amount of time, or maybe goes out of pause state into a play state (just thinking of other ways to do this)? Do you more knowledgable folks know, do the Rockbox people want suggestions of desired features (I don't want to presume anything or get into their way); the best way to make suggestions? The GB emulator is based on gnuboy, so in theory every game that works with gnuboy will work on the iRiver.
Once we see a decent RB LCD driver (to exploit all four shades of gray) and once the iRiver's clock speed goes from 11mhz (RB's default) to the full 140mhz, we'll start seeing some actual playability, granted optimizations will probably be needed. Exciting times ahead! |

I'm guessing the remote LCD is delayed whilst Linus waits for a remote to appear to test it with. He's currently getting a broken remote delivered by some dude on the RockBox forums. He'll have to fix the plug end of it though in order to get it working (Bit of rewiring and soldering). So this could effect how long it takes to get working.

Deadman, do you know if Rockbox waits to deliver a wholly completed firmware, or is it possible that a "mostly complete" version (such as without remote ability, or with only some of the matters I note above) could issue, with subsequent improvements/revised firmware versions?

I can only speculate, but I would imagine that they'll release a full firmware, unless a feature non-essential to functioning (eg. remote) is delayed for a significant period.

I must admit to finding it hard to understand the logs at the Rockbox site (no engineer here). What does "has sound" mean--that the firmward can do what it needs to with music files, to decode and produce the music?

That said, it doesn't do much fun for most people since it doesn't yet produce any sound.

And on the issue of submitting feature-requests: first you should figure out what Rockbox can do and already does, _then_ you should start thinking about submitting feature-requests. If you check out the Rockbox web site, we have hundreds of outstanding requests already, adding bogus or duplicate ones there only annoys us. It's not that we don't appreciate good ideas and feedback, it's just that the shear amount can be hard to deal with.

Thanks-- just wanted to see what was there and the protocol for following, to avoid--as you noted--any annoyance and distraction from your real work.
By the way, the "faster/dynamic/improved scrolling" relates to the fact that the iRiver players use a single speed for scrolling thru lists (such as of songs), which especially can be a nuisance when the list is thousands of songs long. A dynamic scrolling system (the scroll speed increases as the button is held down) or scroll "jumping" from letter to letter in the alphabet would eliminate this issue. Thanks, again! |

Don't know if this can be added to the "progress" thread:
I was on IRC and it seems that the GminiPort and the iRiverport will share some coding progress since some controler are shared (i2s and i2c) A very cool thing, no? Cheers
