I decided to bite the bullet with Rockbox. It works wonderfully, even though it's lacking sound its other features such as games makes it so worth it. Because I can, I've decided to host the rockboxed firmware for the H120 version (I used the v1.40 US firmware).

What you need to do it take the firmware that TCK put up and put those files from the .zip onto your h1xx. You should have a rockbox folder now with all sorts of stuff in it. The file you have has rockboy built in, but it's an old version. Download the newest version here: Rockboy

Extract those to the h1xx and overwrite anything it asks.

As far as recognizing games... after you flash to rockbox firmware and start it up, press the a-b button to get to settings. go to general settings -> file view -> show files. Change that using up and down to "supported." Now it can recognize .gb and .gbc roms.

Oh, and if you wanted a slightly more up to date version... here's the 1.63 rockbox firmware:

1.63 Rockbox
Courtesy of zezayer. It's a completely stable version as I'm using it right now.

1.65 hasn't been tested with compiled rockbox yet.

I can't get TCK's hex file loading iriver into my H120. What am I doing wrong?

I put it into my H120 root dir and did a firmware upgrade. I also downloaded the latest daily build from rockbox.org and put it in the root als well.

No matter what i do, it does not boot rockbox, but the standard 1,40 firmware (with some rockbox logo's in it) instead. Help me please, i'm desperate.

Krekker are you using the remote or the main unit to turn the H120 on?

The rockbox group made a mod to the bootloader that if you use the remote to turn the H120 on it will automatically load the IRiver firmware. If you use the on button on the actual player you should boot into rockbox. Also if you hold the record button and the power button on the main unit it will boot the IRiver firmware. This is one of the reasons the Rockbox devs are hesitant to post an easy way to create the bootloader until everything is ready to go.

I fixed the link... so it works now. It doesn't matter where you put games on the hard drive. Rockbox works through file tree and will recognize wherever you put the games. If you read my post about how to enable them, you shouldn't be having problems. However if you're using TCKs "rockbox" firmware, you may run into problems...

So gocorps, ALL I need to do is put the hex file in the root and upgrade the firmware? What about the .rockbox folder with all the files in? Is that created automatically when the frmware is flashed? Also, since the firmware you linked is presumably US, is this fine to use on my EU player?
Thanks

Yes, the only thing you may have trouble with is radio, but all players are the same, regardless of location.

And what about the font for the custom display. How do you change it?

Put the .hex file in the root directory like normal. You also have to put the rockbox folder there too. Then upgrade the firmware like normal. Make sure you have enough battery power while upgrading, or just plug it in, or you'll have an expensive paperweight and nothing more if you lose power during an upgrade.

Hmm. The roms don't show up. Any solution? I just put them in a folder in the root called ROMS.

EDIT: It works now.

Because they don't work with the iRiver - this shows compatibility.

One feature I want most is different scrolling options. I would like the otpion of a static screen which is changed every time the cursor goes past the bottom. Basically like the iRiver has it now and not like rockbox is - the cursor stays on the artist at the bottom of the screen. It makes it much more blurry and impossible to read.

I download the file posted by gorcorps and installed it like I would normally any firmware.

I see something loading up at the boot screen but then it just goes straight to the regular iriver firmware.

I've tried holding record and pressing play.

I assume I'm doing something wrong. Anyone wanna fill me in on what I can do, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

personally i prefer the way Rockbox currently has it, but having the option to change it would be very nice.

What about a .bmp image viewer plugin?

Much like the H3xx models can view gifs and JPGs, why not give rockbox a .bmp pic viewer?

yes, you need to download the daily build from the rockbox site. Im sure theres a link somewhere in this thread. Then use the winzip wizard and get the rockbox folder. When you have the rockbox foler, put it in the root of your H120. Also put it in the modded firmware. Do a firmware upgrade. RockBox will start by default. Your not putting the daily build in i think.
