Would someone please tell me specifically why Rockbox won't be able to work with WMP? All I've been able to find is that it is a closed source, but I don't know exactly what that means and what the ramifications are. My best friend is a software and hardware engineer at Microsoft and if there is anything he could do to assist I will ask him, but I need to know exactly what to ask him.

I assume you mean WMA rather than WMP. Basically, the WMA format is closed, therefore there are no free encoders available. It's nothing you can do, unless your best friend is Bill Gates :P

The WMA format is worse than closed source : it's proprietary, meaning that not only is the format not publicly described by microsoft, but you have to pay them money to use the format in any way (and even then you get a restrictive license preventing you from disclosing details about the format, and so on).
Reverse-engineering is then out of the question (illegal in addition to freaking hard). Politically, if a microsoft employee had the power to give Rockbox a WMA license, it STILL would be impossible to integrate because MS employees can NOT work on free / GPL projects by contract. Only hope would be to add hooks between iRiver's firmware and Rockbox, to make the original firmware play the files as a "black box". I don't know if that is even possible - I doubt it. |

I think I read on the site somewhere that the will look in to it. Correct me if I am wrong.
That idea is great. My college is 20 km from where I live but the radio is totally screwed their. Would it be possible to let the frequency slide along when we travel??? That would be awesome. I think it can't be done because it would have been in a lot of cars already if it could. But the radio's in cars all have that displaying system. I don't know what it's called. Could a H1xx receive it??? Now I flipping, right? Well those guys r doing an amazing job. I'll stop bothering them with my stupid ideas. edit: I surfed around rockbox.org for a minute and found this: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...tureComparison It says fm radio/recorder will be on rockbox!!! As far as implementing RDS, one of the developers would have to let us know if there are limitations of the FM hardware, or if the RDS is documented so that code can be written, or better yet, if anyone is willing to code it. |

With the frequency sliding along I mean when your listening in the train the frequency is different every 10 minutes. The original firmware can scan for a frequency (when you search a station). Lets say it would do that al the time then you would have to set frequencies in every city. But it's though cause you have to set it before you start traveling.

Yes, of course Rockbox will support the FM radio. It does for all the other platforms, so I can't see why it wouldn't do it on the iRiver. We already have code for the FM radio chip on the iRiver, as it is the same chip as on the Archos Ondio models.
RDS is not possible, since it requires RDS decoding hardware, which isn't present on the H-series hardware.

As RDS/EON isn't possible would it be possible to name the presets instead?

Currently, Rockbox supports up to 32 named preset stations. It has no support for different "sets" of presets, but that can of course be changed.

Just a thought.. Will Rockbox have support for for example Japanese characters? I have a lot of mp3s which have either japanese filenames or/and id3-tags. I really hope this will be possible since i don't really want to rename all my japanese songs.
