Rockbox is still under development, alpha stage, when an official version is released I'm sure they will have figured out the best route to take with wma files.
Support for wma wont be implemented due to legal issues. (at least thats what i think it is).

Unplugging USB Problem

I'm using bootloader v5, latest daily builds, but everytime I unplug the USB from my H140, the player just hangs, with either the USB icon or text displayed on screen.

I need to use a paperclip and do a reset EVERY time I unplug my USB connection.

Anyone got any ideas?

The lagging will either be the volume change bug, or if it doesn't occur when changing volume then it's most likely when you're viewing files and the harddrive is just spinning up - if you tend to look at the one folder for a while, then by the time you exit it then the drive may have spun itself down again, so it has to start up once more, causing a delay. Try going to general settings, system, disk, spindown and increasing it, I have it at 15 seconds.

K thanks for the advice, just think its a bit stupid, sure they could patch it to just ignore wma's i love the shuffle with crossfade but when it hits a wma the player crashes and it ruins it. If anyone knows a way round it help is appreciated. I do understand that its a work in progress.

It seems Rockbox fails to detect that the USB plug is removed. I haven't yet found out why the current detection method doesn't work on some players, as it works on all my H1x0 players. I wish I had a non-working player to test with.

I agree that it isn't very well handled today. You don't have to reset though, just press STOP and you're back in the browser.

Okay, but.

Well thats okay, jus hope something can be done about it in the near future. When it happens during my root playlist, it freezes, stop doesnt respond and you cant switch off.

hey i've had this problem too...
with recent builds its says cant find codec, and the message flickers with the NOW PLAYING SCREEN, and then stalls , which means you need to reset....i dont think the STOP button helps, not going to try again

Why were they ripped into WMA's in the first place...

To answer the original question, converting WMAs to MP3/OGG Vorbis is a fairly bad idea. You will lose a good deal of quality - it's possible to do, but I don't really know how. A better option would be to either convince your friends to rip to a less restrictive format or borrow their cds and rip them yourself.

There are a number of reasons one might only have an WMA. I incorrectly ripped (before I knew what I was doing) about five of my own CD's when I first got my H-140. I created a playlist with just those albums. Once I loaded Rockbox it was no good. So I just deleted everything and re-ripped them. But sometimes that's not available to you. And as much as I'm against the massive p-2-p culture (not trying to start anything here, really. please.) a "little" copying between friends is cool, imo.

I Googled convert WMA to MP3 and found a lot of hits on software you can download. They cover several format conversions (ogg vorbis, etc). Take a look at these downloadables:

Ya there are ways to convert it, I would try one some songs and see how the sound. What bitrate WMA's are they, if the bitrate is 192 or higher it shouldn't be a problem at all. I'm pretty sure Nero can convert them for you, thats a place to start. I'll look around and see if there are some other posts.

Also my previous post was really meant jokingly, sorry if it didn't seem that way.

Do you know what the bitrates of the original WMA files are?

Evil - try dbPowerAmp? I don't have a link to it, I'm afraid, but if you search this site, I know one will come up for sure.

Worked for me, and that's exactly what I used it for - converting inherited wma's (of tiny bitrates... someone clearly had no idea what they were doing) into mp3's. I can just about tell those that are converted, as some cymbal crashes sound a bit tinny, but it's all perfectly listenable to. Certainly better than my youth when I had to copy cassettes from my parent's collections to listen to!

I have been away for a few weeks. Is there anything I should do besides getting the latest daily build? I have bootloader v2 at the moment. Should I upgrade to a new one? And how would I do that? The same way i did when i first installed rockbox?

Yep to all. And the latest build (from this weekend and on) contains an FM radio. (Will be worked on in the future (presets and the like), but it works just fine!)

Note that a webpage is actively being worked on today, providing step-by-step instructions to compile the source code and do patching, even for us nebifiles. Sounds wonderful for getting access to those great patches that are not yet in the software.
