I have been loosely following the RockBox project, waiting for it to user-friendly enough for me to dive in...

I just took the dive and I am speechless. The install was beyond simple, and the Rockbox firmware, well...it brings a tear to the eye.

This is EXACTLY what I have been wanting since I bought my 140 2 years ago. And I haven't even figred half of it out, that is just from playing around with it for 5 minutes.

I am so EXICTED, I can't even tell you. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. You guys have done an INCREDIBLE job. Thank you, Thank you. Thank you...a million times over.

I am leaving for a 6-week Asia trek in 2 weeks and Rockbox is going to make those hours on the plane SO much more bearable. I am going to be deleting, making playlists, and renaming like nobody's buisness.

THIS is how a mp3 jukebox should be. Thank you Rockbox. Thank you.

Make sure you have Supported or All files set to display and navigate to your jpg file you want to see. The source file doesn't have to be monochrome but naturally the player will display on its screen that way

I agree with Alienresident. I've been hesitant to try Rockbox and finally plunged in last night--an entirely painless process. Although if you haven't flashed your firmware in awhile, remember that it takes a minute or 2 while the firmware upgrades--while the seconds ticked by and the "Upgrading firmware" screen stayed silent, I started to wonder if I had bricked my player. And it's great fun--a new generation of options! ("Upgradeable firmware" come true . . . .)

A few questions for those of you "more senior":

-- Can Rockbox play music while going fast-forward/in reverse in a file; is that possible or in the works? (A nice feature for rewinding to a particular phrase of music, for example.)

-- Does Rockbox have an A-B loop function (again, good for studying music)?

-- Can anyone recommend a larger font for Rockbox, preferably bolded? Something big and bold enough for car use or a player across the desk. (I tried to load up a bolded 14-point font from the font library, but it's a no-go; I read, at one point at Rockbox, that this was a font buffer (?) issue.)

In the course of trying to find the answers to the above (and sorry if I missed them--I really did try), I did find (and likely most of you already know these, but maybe someone else doesn't):

-- Press and hold in the Navi button while playing, to get to a quick menu for sound settings, playlists, bookmarks, and ID3 info.

-- Hold in the A-B button for a few seconds for a quick menu for shuffle mode, repeat mode, and what files to show.

-- While in a list, hold in the play/pause button and press up or down on the Navi button, to go up or down a page in the list.

Thanks!

By the way, lotsa stuff to discover there, part of the fun (if only iRiver would have done this--what great marketing that would have been!); only hope I don't wear out my buttons trying things.

And now, a matter I just can't get the hang of and can't find: could someone simply list the steps, 1-by-1, to create an OTF playlist of distinct songs that one selects from different folders? I'm sorry to even ask, but I seem to have OTF playlist-block and just can't seem to get it, in practice, from the Rockbox manual, or from posts here or elsewhere; and I've tried repeatedly, to no avail. Thanks--

Yes, I had a problem with this as well, here's how I do it:

1. Highlight the track (make sure its stopped) you want to be first on the playlist.
2. Press and hold the joystick, and select Playlist>Insert
3. The track will start playing. Leave it playing, and now press the joystick down once and navigate to the next track you want to play.
4. Press and hold the joystick and Select PLaylist>Insert Last.
5. Repeat steps 3 - 5

To view what you have queued up, press the A-B button, go to Playlist Options, and View Current Playlist. To save it, click on Save Current Playlist.

you can also view current playlist by pressing joystick in (long press) then select playlist there, no need to go the long way round via the A-B button.

This bit had me confused for days I worked out it needed a very short click or I just kept going round in circles.

Saving playlists took me a while to sort as well. Got it now though thanks to a lot of searching and reading. Got a lot of time on my hands right now so I'm loving getting to grips with Rockbox. Well done to all involved. My 140 is once again my pride and joy.

Thanks. Actually, I think that's smaller than some of the others currently available--just hard to see across a desk/in the car while driving. Would be great to have something at least as large as the iRiver font, and even larger options (e.g. for driving).

And thanks to the above for the playlist instructions! I was starting to go mad from it all (well, madder than usual . . .). And reassuring to see that I wasn't the only one!

There's a 4000 byte limit on the total font binary at the moment. There's probably room for more but no one has worked out the code to increase the font buffer size while not taking too much RAM away from something else.

EDIT: Open mouth, insert foot. The latest CVS commit:
Quote:
Modified Files:
font.h
Log Message:
Increased maximum file size for models with LCD height larger than 64 to
10000 bytes. Also adjusted the buildzip script to dynamically figure out the
maximum buffer size for the particular build that the zip is made for.

Thanks! And talk about responsiveness! And so I guess this means, for future builds, the larger fonts (including those at Rockbox) will be possible? Edit: per the folks at Rockbox, yes.

Also, is there a favorite/good source somewhere for other .fnt files? (I spent time this morning looking, but, quite candidly, was overcome by the searching, etc., and didn't get to anyplace helpful, at least as far as I could tell. Also looked for Truetype-fnt conversion tools, but couldn't find anything.)

Thanks!

You are probably a lot better off searching for BDF fonts, or tools that convert fonts to BDF, as that is a generic font format used elsewhere. In the Rockbox project we have a tool that converts BDF to .fnt (this latter being the Rockbox specific font format not used anywhere else).

How can you do this???

I have tried to save a playlist but I seem to be unable to change the default name of the playlist, I can move around the "virtual keyboard" but all I seem to be able to do is add characters to the end of the file name..I have done a lot of searching but this is getting very frustrating..help please....
