I just checked out the 'cube' plugin using the latest build (which has greyscale support). looks good! somehow 4 shade greyscale seems even better than full colour
Am i imagining it or did i read on the forum somewhere that it's possible to get more than 4 shades of grey by rockbox turning the pixels on/off really quickly? that would be really good.

The CPU is idle though, so it's not as bad as, say, decoding Musepack files (which, last I checked was still not fast enough, and therefore ran at 120MHz constantly). How large the difference is, I don't really know.
Actually, http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie.../IriverBattery shows that decoding at 48MHz is only slightly less battery intensive than having the CPU idle at 120MHz. So it's not that bad for the battery life.

How about potential damage to the LEDs? I dunno, but is them turning on and off repeatedly going to wear out the LEDs (not that I know much about LEDs, of course)?

do you mean the backlight leds? no, LEDs don't care being switched on and off million times, as long as the current isn't too high they have a long lifetime. don't know how much but shure longer than you'll have your player.
with the LCD I don't know, I think switching pixels doesn't change the lifetime.

Has anyone else noticed that the image is really dark unless you tilt it at an angle? It will be darker if you just look at it straight on. It is on mine anyway
It's amazing the way a group of dedicated guys can work together to create something far superior then what a big company came up with. Great stuff guys! EDIT: Another suggestion, when browsing folders, just say you have your music in: #-F G-M N-S T-Z if your go into #-F say, and you have loads of albums, and browse to the last, it would be handy if there was a shortcut at the very bottom to the next folder in that root directory (in this case the next folder would be G-M) so you can just click this and it will open that folder. wow, lena looks awesome. well done guys! the iriver screen is pretty high res for a monochrome mp3 player so greyscale pictures look great. for those that dont know, jpgs can be viewed simply by selecting them in the file browser.
its a great shame it only works when audio is not playing. the oscilloscope plugin is meant to work while music is playing right? a (very) simple winamp style visualisation using full greyscale would look brilliant, i hope this limit can be overcome in time. afaik no other portable player has anything more advanced than a vu-meter?

When I click a picture, it loads up is fine and then goes a bit darker and looks much worse than when it first loaded, this whole process excluding loading takes half a second or so and it doesn't keep getting darker or anything, it just immediately goes to a certain darkness, it's only when I tilt the screen I can see a bright picture. Does anyone else experience this? is there a sollution?

try turning down the contrast? mine's set on 27 and it looks fine. i don't know about the 'gets darker in first 1/2 second' problem, i don't have that.

i have noticed the 1/2 second problem, i think it's just the screen adjusting to the greys. o and who here agrees with me that "Grayscale" should be "Greyscale" ???

Select it and then chose "queue next"... It will select the song as next without keeping it in the playlist (unlike the option "insert next" which do the same but keep the file in the playlist!)

The procedure that Tang has pointed out obvious is not a "one button" solution. However, one of the Rockbox developers has indicated that there are plans to incorporate a one-button function similar to what exists in the Iriver firmware. Still, even as is, a song can easily be queued or inserted into a playlist in a matter of seconds.

The first instant of a track seems to be lost unless there's already something playing. In particular, I tend to lose an instant from the first track in a directory, and left-clicking to go back to the start doesn't help. Rewinding to the start may work; I'm not totally sure. Putting a 2-second silent track first does fix it, but it seems like a real bug. The first track of Prince's Diamonds and Pearls, Thunder, has a very abrupt start and is a good test case. This is with the 20050720 build I've been using, and with the 20050729 build I just tried.
Apologies if this has been previously reported or if there's a better place to do so. Also if this is a known issue; I do realize that things are improving like crazy. Thanks Rockbox! |
