Reverse Boot?
Just got another H10 (6GB, "system files missing" which I can fix for $30 on eBay). I was wondering if RockBox is at the stage where it can boot to the iRiver firmware by default, and into RockBox only when a button is held.

That's not a 'stage' that the official version will ever be at.

I suppose you could make a patch for it though, just a few code changes... But, honestly, why would you want this?

The problem is, as far as I know that the OF doesn't really shut down so the rockbox Bootloader doesn't even execute after shutting down OF. Just when it shut's down properly after some hours you can boot to RB without resetting the player manually.

Being the good samaritan I am :P I have compiled a bootloader that does this task for you. You must hold down the left (Cancel) button in order to boot into rockbox, otherwise you get the OF, aslong as Dual Booting is correctly configured.
Tested it, worked fine for me, enjoy. http://www.4shared.com/file/10611115/a66680da/H10.html Last edited by Jonno12345 : February 15th, 2007 at 03:44 PM. |

It did, there's nothing that can be done about firmware shutting down short of finding a way to modify the OF. It's not hard to hit the reset button on the 20gb or pull out and replace the battery though.

I'll try this out as soon as my H10 comes in the mail. So basically when you say it won't shut down, you mean when you power down from the OF, it will go into 'sleep' like it normally would with OF (not dual booted), no more battery drain then the normal OF. You won't be able to switch into RockBox unless you reset the plater? Great, that's no big deal, it's like the OF plus RB when you need it.

Exactly. It will be exactly like running the OF, with a small stage inbetween turning on and accessing the firmware... This stage will just be some writing on the screen about the Rockbox bootloader, then it will proceed to load the OF. The OF by default will go into a 'sleep' mode when powered off, rather than turning off completely. This means, when you power it on again, it will load back to the OF, in the state it was when you switched it off. In order to access Rockbox, you need to completely power off the H10, by removing and replacing the battery. This starts the boot process off again, and will allow you to access the Rockbox bootloader. Simply hold the Left (Cancel) button then, and it will go into Rockbox instead.
When powering off in Rockbox, it totally powers off, no sleep mode, so if you power off in Rockbox and wish to return to Rockbox again, you need to hold down the button again whilst turning on. Hope that makes things clearer. When you do receive your H10, make sure you read the wiki or guide on this forum on how to set up Dual Booting. The process will be exactly the same, except use my bootloader rather than the one you get told to use, otherwise it will boot Rockbox by default and OF on keypress. |

I think it was my fault, because I tried booting on OF and RockBox a few times before and it worked fine
