As i understand by surfing on the net, MisticRiver is THE place where Rockbox, and especially Experimental Rockbox topics are discussed, annoucements are done, patches, WPS, etc. (even rockbox.org is not so "public")

On the other hand, MisticRiver is also THE place of iRiver Enthusiasts.

So i'm wondering if it would be problematic to create a specific section in the forum dedicated to iPod...!

Personally, i'm more & more disappointed by iRiver, regarding their product roadmap (perso, i need a big quality player (>60GB), with a good battery lifetime, and it seems that the trend is purely that iRiver wants to have the market segment of small capacity Flash players, at least for the next few years) ; H3xx is now some years old, the family is dead, no repalcement is foreseen...
and my player is not in a so good state : battery issues, scratches all over the housing, HD full-up, so that i begin to think about DAP replacement, and you will have understood that i'm having a look in direction of ...iPod !

i always considered that this machine is beautiful, in every HW point of view (thickness, display, click-wheel, housing...);
i prefered to buy iRiver because of its functionnalities (including recording + FM radio), and also for cost reasons;
i refused to buy iPod because of : a) cost, b) iTunes management of the content of the HD, c) no accessories sold serial ...
but now that RBx can be ported to iPod, i really consider the question !
some people here have already jumped, and that's why i would like to see appearing a section in the forum dedicated to this DAP...

what do you think ?

I reworded the options of your poll so that they would make more sense.

Strictly speaking, MR is not the place to go to find out about RockBox - rockbox.org is.

But, if there's enough demand, then I'm sure the Mods will make an iPod section within the 'All things RockBox' forum.

indifferent to the idea, some staunch iriverheads have bought ipods, so they'll most probably hang out here, perhaps it would be handy to have a ipod forum, if I bought a ipod I would still hangout here.

Honestly, Rockbox discussion should happen at Rockbox.org. The iPod and Archos people are already generally there, and it's really only the iRiver people who are here. Which results in some difficulty, as sometimes people don't even know about the official builds (ran into a case of someone who thought the Experimental was the only precompiled build, and a clean one would require him to compile) or what steps to take BEFORE filing a bug report. Also, bringing up bugs here, it'll take a lot longer before they get to the attention of developers.

I voted yes. Inside the rockbox section would be perfect.

I realise that this is an iRiver fan site and it should remain so but many of the community are venturing across to iPods with the porting of rb. Give them a place to chat without having to wade through the no_Obs

Since Misticriver, I think, pays for the bandwidth that Rockbox uses, they are, in some ways, the same site.

The iLounge is not much chop for Rockbox stuff, as few use it, and most are not interested. We, however, have an active modding community, and have had for some time.

I am wondering if Misticriver could expand, and become DAP central? We could then have a Rockbox forum, that would be *the* Rockbox forum, which would leave Rockbox people in the same place they already are. And add a few more as well....

I voted yes.

I voted "don't care." I would never pay more for a trendy box with fewer features. But I don't care what other people buy or discuss. If I don't want to read a thread I won't, whether it's about iPods or Flamin' Hot Cheetos. I'm very capable of not clicking forums I don't want to read.

There's already a DAP Central. It's the Digital Archive Project.

I like the idea of this place becoming a DAP central,
Still wondering considering the Rockbox forums are hosted on the same server as MR if they could be joined is some way (i.e. if you post in one, it automatically appears in the other) so both communities benefit.

If you by "Rockbox" in this context mean "the Rockbox forums" then you are indeed correct, but we also serve 13-15GB/day from servers _not_ provided by MR.

Irregardless, the point still stands that MR is making a large and very useful donation to the RockBox project.

I thought aye was both pirate and scots (something to do with the number of scottish pitates)

I think it might be better if more rockbox discussions hapend in the general rockbox forum (this might be helped if it wasn't a moderated forum and can somone explain why posts arnt counted in here again?)

I voted yes because:
1. I am a devoted iRiver fan, so I'm here everyday.
2. My son has a RockBoxed Ipod Video.
3. Many iRiver owners are also owners of iPod.
4. MisticRiver is THE BEST dap community I've found, and I love it here. Everyone here is so helpful and knowledgeable. Even if I didn't have an iRiver I'd still hang out here!
5. ilounge SUCKS! Clueless people w/ their iTunes! (no offense)

I'm exactly in the same situation:
I have owned :
-IHP-120 (before rockbox)
-H320 (sold but love it)
-Iaudio X5 (sold: small and bad screen/ hate jostick)
-H340 for 180 euros couldn't resist: 5being sold boy it's huge! battery is getting crappy but i will miss this iriver!

On the market there is nothing better today:
2 options:

Zen vision:m or ipod 5g
Why i want to get the ipod:

- skinny it's going to be a big difference between the h340
- Price (dollar 1.285 !!! ) that's 70 euros rebate!
- Looks sweet
- Hate apple but love rockbox(i can't have an audio player without it! really!)
- Screen is huge!
Don't need fm radio.dictaphone

Why not zen vision:m: no rockbox big size...

Thanks gaston for this poll and please misticriver can we have this section!! It will mean mre users(ipod community) so more money from subscribers

I'm all for it. I don't have an iPod, but lots of my friends do, and I've begun to put rockbox on them. It's nice to find help here becuase I know it's reliable, fast, and overall much better than anywhere else I've found.

Official answer: Because this is the Rockbox "Lounge" and posts in lounges don't count.

Personal Answer: It makes no sense to me.

I agree that there is no reason for this forum to be moderated. However, this is a change that needs to be made by the admin staff.

I voted a strong NO.

Here's why: This is an iRiver forum. The reason we have rockbox sub-forums is because rockbox was ported to several iriver products.

I also reject the idea of MR becoming a DAP Central, primarily because DAPreview.net already serves that purpose, and I don't think they can/should be competed with (look at creativelabratory vs. epizenter).

There is already an ipod forum (ilounge.com) and just because some MR members buy ipods and don't want to go elsewhere to discuss them doesn't mean that MR should be turned into DAP Central or any of that trash. It's like designing a product to serve one purpose and then later adding tons of updates that try to make it do something entirely different. The phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind.

In response to andrewmel's suggestion that MR forums and rockbox forums are the same because the bandwidth is paid for by MR...that is hardly the case. The RB forums are very different. And I can't speak for the RB devs, but I think you'd find that if you talked to them about making MR the official home of the rockbox forums, I don't think they'd like it.

I am still shocked, a good ten minutes after seeing this thread that there are that many people who voted yes. And in the end, it's really Jeff's call. But in my opinion, it's a big mistake.

Pi thinks of his h320, a beautiful music player that added video and then rockbox came and added much more again

Febs: I knew that it would have to be an admin to change it and was hoping an admin might spot the post and reconsider or give a fuller explanation

Ahh, but video playback isn't completely different. The 3xx series plays music and displays photos. Video isn't that crazy a concept when you think of it that way. And rockbox hasn't made it completely different either, made it a better audio player really...
