Wikipedia on Rockbox?
A friend of mine was showing me about ipodlinux and this project caught my eye:http://ipodlinux.org/Wikipedia. It's a project to make all of wikipedia available on ipodlinux, which I think is pretty darn cool. I couldn't find any reference to the idea on rockbox.org or misticriver and was wondering if there were any plans for similar thing on rockbox? Could it operate on a similar basis as the dictionary plugin that's underway?

how much space do you think that would take up?

That would be absolutely amazing!! However, it would most likely take up a shit load of space. Also, the scrolling would be quite a pain in the ass.
I think this would be the coolest feature of rockbox if this were possible!

Interesting. The space thing would really be an issue though....

Allegedly the text of the english wikipedia is 1.3GB currently.

1.3 gb is quite a lot considering i dont have that much free space right now in my h340, but it would certainly be worth it to make some space.
searching and scrolling might be a pain... and i'm not sure how links between different articles would work. |

1.3 gigs compressed? If not, 1.3 gigs of text can be highly compressed.

It's 1.3GB of text maybe, but there is at least 10-15 times that much if you include images and other media

That would be absolutely awsome. Imagine the pub quiz. I would LOVE to have an entire reference encyclopedia right at my fingertips, wherever I am!

using torrent is perfectly nice and legal for such file transfers since wikipedia is open source, and so is rockbox, so as long as documentation is included with the wikipedia file, we're all good.
now scrolling and links have to be worked out, because sure as hell i know i won't be scrolling for 10 minutes to get to what i need.

If you forget about the images and such, this is very doable. However, the search system would have to be sophisticated. Separate it into alphabetical categories, then the search utility uses the first letter to open the corresponding directory, and search for the word as an entry heading. I don't think we'd be able to have the X% Ma |
