I don't really know Visual Basic nor the RB plugin format (I know C and its variants, but not how to write plugins with them), so I couldn't help with those. I could write a PHP script to download it, but that's kinda arbitrary, since it needs to be now targeted for Windows users (there's a bash script on the iPod linux site for Linux users). I'll setup the webspace and such.

I just think that at 1.3GB, the choice has been made before I can make it IMO, MU4L |

Thats a great idea! I think a search element would need to be implemented and defentally a way to update it easily without having to re-DL the entire X amount of gigs. Anyhow I would be willing to help seed the torrent if for this did end up happening, I'm sure we would end up having no problem anyways distrubuting it, if we did use torrents.

There seems to be alot of negative feedback right now. Point is, currently we need someone to help write the search plugin and someone help organize the file. I still think that if it's broken up into directories A-Z and each directory contains a file with Aa.txt, Ab.txt, Ac.txt, etc., then it will greatly help the search utility. Like arcade games, the letters would be selected with the up and down arrows (cycling through the alphabet) and moved to the next place with the left and right arrows. NAVI would initiate the search.
This is a very doable idea if someone with the proper knowledge is willing to put forth the effort. I'll try to learn and stumble my way through plugin writing, but we'll see what happens. EDIT: I've taken the liberty of roughing out how a search for an entry on "Apples" would be conducted: What's the first letter? A? Open the A directory. What's the second letter? P? Open Ap.txt (or P.txt, maybe) What's the word? Apples? Remove the S in case it is plural. Search APPLE in headings. Display text. Last edited by TheCowBoX : February 15th, 2006 at 04:18 PM. |

Why don't we just have an onscreen keyboard and type in what were searching for? This would narrow it down alot. It would be to hard and tedious to search for something such as "William Shakespeare" It would take quite along time to navigate where as you could just type in a shorter search term like "wil sha" and it would find all results with letters in those sequence.

Start small and work your way up. By the way, it's William Shakespeare. I mean, do you want to code the graphics and such for an on-screen keyboard? Also, it would never just pull it up like Ctrl+F on Firefox. There's far too much information for it to automatically cache the whole thing. Also, if you can't spell what you're looking for, you should learn how to. It's never bad to learn something new. Anyways, I thought of a way of separating the heading from the entry: put brackets on it. So, instead of searching for APPLE, it will search for [APPLE, leaving it open-ended for the rest of the title. Of course, put words like THE, A, AN, etc. at the end.

Alright, I basically am extremely confused on what I've been doing but I've made a wee bit of progress. I have an articles folder on my computer that has every wikipedia article in it. They don't appear to be text files, but when i open them up with notepad I can read everything. It's pretty sweet. The folder has somewhere around 300,000 files in it. If I were to convert the files to text and were able to cut out some commands at the top of each file, I would basically have all of wikipedia on my h340. However, the folder is so huge that I can't open it. I can only search for articles within it. I've been trying to follow the instructions on the link at the top of the page, but I'm to "coding-retarded" to understand what to do.
I recommend that someone other (and better) than me try to do what I'm doing.

Over 300,000 wikipedia files for Rockbox. WIll it crash my player?
So i've been goofing off with the wikipedia on ipod crap and I've managed to download about 312,000 files. I basically have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm wondering if there is a viewable text limit if I put them all in one folder. Would this crash my player?

Under General Settings-->System-->Limits-->Max files in dir browser, you'll see that you can only have 10,000 files in a directory. Thus, you'd need 32 folders for these files...not sure if that screws anything up....
