i hate to be the nag, and i know people get scolded for this all the time, but its been about two thirds of a month since the last signs of rockipedia life, and 10 days since the last actual post. it seemed like we were getting close, is anything still happening?

Work is still progressing... the stage we are at is waiting for the converter to get to the stage that it can output the entire Wiktionary and a timely and memory effective manner.

AFAIK the dict plugin is incomplete and I'm not sure of any progress being done on it.

Don't forget that the rockipedia plugin will read any mediawiki dump <hint, hint, nudge nudge..wiktionary> that you throw at it, so we're not just talking wikipedia here.

I DO know that (slow) progress is being made on the RP plugin (someone needs to light a fire under hellworm....) and all will be posted in due time.

I am programming the plugin itself, Hellworm is programming the MediaWiki converter and gursikh is providing the hosting for the site (http://rockipedia.techmight.com). Wikiriver has provided moral support throughout and kept things moving.

Yep. There's a bug in that the plugin can't scroll past the first screen but it's a handy app for when you're out and about.

I thought I found the info about it on the rb site but I just checked the Wiki and couldn't find the documentation there.
You need to compile a dictionary file for the plugin to work and put the two files you get in /.rockbox . Can't remember the names of the files and can't get at them now (did a format and everything's not back on yet).

Good news. Someone should post this on digg (or a one-time mailing list?) when it's done to cut down on continuous checking of this thread!

As for the dictionary files, here's a post of mine from the Rockbox forums:

Hey,

Thought that ya'all would like an update.....

Hellworm has spent some considerable time working on the converter and I am able to announce that it can convert the Wiktionary (Wikipedia hasn't been tested yet) into Rockipedia format in a 1 minute and using only 50mb or RAM. The final zipped up wiktionary in rockipedia format is 22mb (although it takes up more space unzipped). *claps for hellworm*

We are now working on getting the article retreival side of things working (there are a few bugs that have been found). Both Hellworm and I are busy for around a week so there may not be any more updates for a wee while but rest assured that as soon as there is any update you will be the first to know
