Talking AAC = iPod format?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I just want to know if AAC = mp4?

I used to have an iPod which I have since given away to my mother, but I still have lots of tracks in mp4, which I changed over to mp3, can I, now with rockbox, just use the mp4 files?

AAC is basically MP4 to what I understand, if you converted the files to mp3 they will work fine with RB, however I dont think mp4 is supported by RB, and last check AAC definately wasnt.

AAC is supported in Rockbox. It not yet up to realtime on iriver, but it is on iPod. Look at the bottom of this page: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...ic=SoundCodecs

To clarify the AAC = iPod format question no it is not. The iPod can play it but it an MPEG standard just like MP3.

MP3 = MPEG-1/2 layer III
AAC = MPEG-2/4 Advanced Audio Coding

This means they are both international open standards. Apple does back the format heavily and has an encoder built into Quicktime/iTunes however they do not own it.

MP4 is the container designed to be used with MPEG-4 media (of which AAC is a part). AAC is very commonly muxed into the .mp4 container (which Apple names .m4a for audio only files.)

Hope this clarifies things. For further clarification read this FAQ

As Febs said, its not fully supported yet on iriver, so I guess you'll have to. I'm hoping it will be supported so I can play my podcasts, instead of converting them which takes 5 mins per track.

Yeah, but the only one I listen to(The Ricky Gervais show) can only be download in mp4 from itunes. I can get the mp3 from his site, but only recently now that I've installed firefox and can 'save target as'. (Content advisor in 1E6 wouldn't let me)

Yes, I'd just stick with MP3 over AAC. Far fewer headaches.
