Rockbox in the car..poor reception

Hi

I recently installed Rockbox and noticed that when I use it in my car with the AFT 100 (Iriver ) transmitter the quailty of sound seems pretty poor. A couple fo things happen:

- the music can become very crackly, and it seems to get worse if the remote is moved around(!)

- music does seem quieter than original firmware

- the transimtter cuts out more than when on IRiver firmware

I was just wondering if anyone else had these problems and if theyve managed to overcome them?? I love using rockbox but as it stands think I River firnware gives a better sound in the car!

RockBox will not affect the reception between your FM transmitter and the car's head unit in any way. And the sound shouldn't be that much different. I think you've got some other problem.

There have been a lot of threads lately about the differences in sound between the iRiver firmware and the RockBox firmware - namely how each prevents clipping in different ways. The FM transmitters don't produce the best sound, so unless you have a very high-end transmitter, I don't think you would notice the difference.

Easy to test.

Boot to Rockbox, use transmitter.

Boot to iRiver, use transmitter.

Boot to Rockbox, use transmitter.

Boot to iRiver, use transmitter.

Boot to Rockbox, use transmitter.

Boot to iRiver, use transmitter.

See which is better.

Yeah, do what andrew said, but dont move the iriver.
Keep it in one spot so it doesn't mess with the results.

I use the AF100 in my car with Rockbox and I have noticed no difference in sound quality. The crackling I think is because the AF100 is easy to overdrive, you have to lower the volume to about 50%-60% on both the iRiver FW and Rockbox.

One thing though, I use the line out jack to connect the AF-100. If you're using the headphone jack, you could try the line out jack to see if it makes a difference.

I once connected my phones to my line out by mistake and noticed that you can't drive the lineout as high as the phones output, without introducing distortion.

There was a thread on here about what was true lineout level.

I would suggest using the lineout and setting Rockbox to that level or a bit lower and seeing what happens.

What is the proper line-out volume?
