so id love to try out rockbox

but about 3/4 of my music is wma (like 36GB in over 8000 soungs)

theyre mostly around 160kbps or vbr around there

is there a solid converter that would

a)convert em all to ogg
b)not lose tooo much quality/size and
c)not take more than say a weekend or so? (i've got a 2.0ghz pentium m)

thanks!

ps. i'm new here

I recommend Media Monkey:

- it's fantastic for file conversion
- it preserves all tags
- you can replace the DLL's provided with it, with those from here:

http://www.geocities.jp/aoyoume/aotuv/

in order to get the latest AOTUV encoding of OGG.

I converted 6000+ files in 3 days and yeah, ok, I can hear some slight differences, but overall I am happy with it, and I get to use RockBox...

Media Monkey is also able to sync to iriver devices, including creating the irivnavi.idb tag database.

it is TOTALY POINTLESS converting once compressed music... once more O_o

there is NO QUALITY GAIN (in fact - there is loss)
WMA@160 - it is equivalent of OGG@Q4-Q5
to przerost formy nad trescia... bah... i dunno how to say that in english :P

you should
1) leave as it is (in WMA)
2) rip your CD's once more, but this time to OGG by aoTuV b4.51

No, it is not totally pointless. It is true that there may be some quality loss. The fact that the original poster is looking for a converter that "would not lose too much quality/size" indicates that he is aware that there may be some quality loss from the conversion. Whether that quality loss is perceptible to the original poster, and if so, whether the quality loss is acceptable to him is something that he needs to decide through listening.

It is true that it is pointless to transcode files from one bitrate to another or one format to another in the hopes of increasing quality. But that is not what this thread is about.

yes, I know that and I know what is this thread about... ok
maybe I should say it somehow calmly, like:

hey, but actually you MUST have those WMA files converted? cause - you know - it is like losing 36GB of good files in exchange for "twice compressed" OGG files... and - well - if you would try "rockboxes OGG capability" maybe you should try to rip some of your CD's to OGG by aoTuV b4.51, or try to find some OGG files? it may occure that a week after converting all that files you will be back to those WMA files - and there'll be no back (= no genuine files)
and last but not least - you actually WILL NOT HEAR actual quality of OGG files... it will be quality of wma-ogg compressed files

so think it twice ;]

if yes - http://www.foobar2000.org + http://www.geocities.jp/aoyoume/aotuv/ is for you
(download "special" version of FB2K, make "full" install, download "Download OggEnc aoTuV beta4.51" and place OGGENC.EXE in folder with FOOBAR2000.exe, select files on foobar's playlist, RMB->Convert->OGG@Q5->confrim->wait->here you go )

(better? ;] )

He wants to use rockbox, the WMAs he has do not play so are useless!

Slightly lower quality music is better than no music!

Yes, the best way is to re-encode but it sounds like that is not poss, they are looking for the best alternative!
