upgrading rockbox daily
OK, I may get flamed for this, but honestly, I've read through the tutorials, the "read this first" thread, and other threads that seemed pertinent. My question is: when I update rockbox daily, is it necessary to put both the new ".rockbox" folder and the "rockbox.iriver" file on my player, or just the rockbox.iriver file? Additionally, if I need to add the ".rockbox" folder each time I upgrade, is it sufficient to simply copy the new .rockbox folder over the old one, or do I first need to delete the .rockbox folder that is already on the player, and then add the new one? Thanks

no you will not get flamed for doing anything wrong, but you will be politely asked to do a search on the topic. This topic i will answer and ask for you not to do a search, but to read up on the officail rockbox site (where i got this information) more thoroughly. I dont blame you though, the site is hard to navigate through
you just drag and drop, and select yes to all to overwrite the files that are the same (in the daily build), nothing else. Dont delete all the files becuase you might have a wps you made thats not in the daily builds. EDIT: i forgot to mention that you need to drag and drop both files (the .rockbox folder and the rockbox.iriver)

Yeah, if you don't keep the .rockbox directory and rockbox.iriver files in sync, then the codecs will eventually stop working when the API/ABI's no longer match up.
other plugins will similarly fail. |

Plus, there's no reason to update the rockbox.iriver file without updating the .rockbox folder. Since both come in the same .zip file when you download them, simply extract the entire zip file to the root of your player, and say "yes to all" when it prompts you about whether to overwrite existing files.

When I copy over the whole ".rockbox" folder, though, it copies over plugins I have edited already. For example, I had update the solitaire plugin to make the cards show up bigger on the screen, but after updating rockbox, the plugin is back to its original state and the cards are small. Is there an easy way to update the .rockbox folder without losing plugins I have edited?

Actually, this thread belongs in the Rockbox Lounge/General Stuff also.
The answer to the OP is that since installing Rockbox unzipping a daily build to the root of my player sufficed. I did not need to do anything else. |

It's a good point, but I have to agree with Sanitarium. If you're going to modify files that come in the default daily build, it's a good idea to make copies of the originals and edit the copies instead. This also allows you to double-check for any changes between the current default version and the new default version, which you could then integrate into your custom file.
However, it really is a good idea to back up your current set of .rockbox files, remove them from the player, then drop the new files in, and move over your custom files by hand. This helps avoid clutter AND incompatibilities. I only just upgraded to the latest build from the 10-30-2005 build, and much has changed in the directory structure since then, so I had to rework my custom WPS. Simply put, keep an eye on the changelogs for hints of whether something has changed in the .rockbox directory structure, or just in binary. On a related side note, does anyone else think it would be nice if the file timestamps on the daily build zips represented the last time each file was actually modified in source control? It would certainly help make updates cleaner. It'd also open up some neat possibilities for distribution (ie: Full_Current_Build.z ip and Todays_Changed_Files .zip). OK, shutting up now. :P |

I think sans point about renaming the .rock files is much beter than mine i had thought of using xcopy to copy over the file structurs without copying any of the files (/T I think) then copy the files you want to keep changed into the empty file tree. After that all you have to do is copy the daily build folowed by your almost empty structure Hope this makes sence
